Bloomsburg Beats Mansfield Behind Albanese's 25 Points

MANSFIELD —Michelle Albanese (Wilmington, DE/St. Mark's) scored a career-high 25 points to lead the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team to an 86-76 win over Mansfield University Wednesday night.

Except for a brief 2-2 tie early in the game, the Huskies (9-6, 2-1 PSAC) led from start to finish jumping to a 16-3 lead after the first seven minutes. Karen Yeasted (West Lawn/Holy Name)and Albanese keyed the quick start for the Huskies with each getting six points in the opening seven minutes, including two three-pointers from Albanese.

The Huskies held 14-point leads at two points in the first half, 25-11 and 27-13, before settling for a 12 lead at the break, 45-33 with Yeasted getting 12 first half points and 11 for Albanese.

In the second half, the Mountaineers (5-11) battled back and trimmed the deficit to four points, 50-46, going on a 13-5 run to start the half. Allyson Buss scored eight of the 13 points for Mansfield in the rally.

However, a three-point play from Albanese and a three-pointer from Meggi Rothermel (Minersville/Nativity BVM) in a 30-second span pushed the lead back to 10 points with 15:08 to play. From there the Huskies stretched the margin to 17 points, 71-54, on another three-pointer by Albanese with 10:31 to play. Mansfield got the deficit back to within eight points twice in the second half, but could not get any closer.

Albanese's 25 points surpassed her previous high of 17 points, most recently done in a game last week against Millersville. Her five three-pointers made also tied her career high set against Millersville last season.

Along with Albanese, Rothermel finished with 17, Yeasted 14 and Jen Bryan (Denver/Cocalico) 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for the Huskies.

Lynelle Mosley led Mansfield with 17 points, while Buss had 15 and Stephanie Rieser 12.

Bloomsburg will visit East Stroudsburg Saturday night at 6 p.m.
