Bloomsburg Falls to California (PA) in Women's Basketball ActionBLOOMSBURG—Becky Siembak scored a game-high 24 points to lead California (PA) to an 88-65 win over Bloomsburg University in women's basketball action Sunday afternoon. The Vulcans took the early lead at 5-2 before the Huskies would rally and take a 6-5 lead on jumpers by Jen Bryan (Denver/Cocalico) and Michelle Albanese (Wilmington, DE/St, Mark's) with 16:05 to play in the first half. The basket by Bryan was the 1,000th point of her career. She became the 14th player in Bloomsburg history to reach the mark. The lead for Bloomsburg would be the final lead of the day for the Huskies as the Vulcans would go on 10-1 run to grab a 15-7 lead with 12:19 to play. Sara McKinney keyed Cal with six points in the run. Cal pushed the lead to 14 several times in the first half before taking a 13-point margin into the locker roomer at halftime, 42-29. The Vulcans started the second half with a 10-0 run to push the lead to 23 at 52-29 with 16:49 to play. Bloomsburg broke the run with a three-pointer by Albanese and eventually trimmed the deficit to 13 points at 61-48 with 9:08 to play. Six straight points by Jamie Kauczka (Kingston/Wyoming Valley West) keyed the Huskies' comeback. The Vulcans, though, showed why they are ranked sixth in the country as they quickly pushed the lead back to 20 points at 71-51 with 6:46 to play in the game. McKinney scored the 10-3 run by scoring eight points for Cal. Siembak finished with 24 points and seven rebounds, while McKinney had 21 and Megan Storck 14 for the Vulcans, now 14-0. The Huskie, 7-5, were led by Bryan with 17 points, while Albanese had 12 and Kauczka 10. Bloomsburg will begin PSAC Eastern Division play on Wednesday traveling to Millersville for a 6 p.m. start. |
