Rothermel Propels Bloomsburg Women over Clarion

CLARION —Sophomore Meggi Rothermel (Minersville/Nativity BVM) tied her career-high with 19 points to lead Bloomsburg University to an 82-69 win over Clarion University Sunday afternoon in women's college basketball action.

The Huskies started strong opening a 17-7 lead after the first eight minutes of play. Jen Bryan (Denver/Cocalico) notched seven points and Meaghan Roe (Brownstown/Conestoga) five in the opening minutes of play. After the Golden Eagles trimmed the deficit to five points, 20-15, on two free throws from Courtney Willman, the Huskies went on a 19-6 run over the next six minutes to lead, 39-21, with four minutes to play in the half. Rothermel was on fire in that stretch scoring 12 of the Huskies 19 points, all on three-pointers. It was her back-to-back three pointers early in the run that pushed the lead from seven to 13 points in a span of 30 seconds.

The Huskies put the game out of reach early in the second half as they outscored the Golden Eagles, 15-9, to take a 65-40 lead with 12:41 to play. Roe scored six and Karen Yeasted (West Lawn/Holy Name) four in the run for Bloomsburg.

Rothermel hit a career-high six three-pointers in the game, one shy of the school record to lead the Huskies. She also added six assists and three steals. Roe had her second big game in a row scoring 17 points, while Byran had her double-double in as many games with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Yeasted added 13 points in the win.

Clarion, 5-3, was led by Heather Cigich with 20 points, while Amelia Harris scored 15 points of the bench.

Bloomsburg, 4-1, will be in action Dec. 28th at the Capital Key Classic in Albany, NY.
