Huskies for Win Over Indiana (PA) in Women's HoopsBLOOMSBURG—Jen Bryan (Denver/Cocalico) scored 20 points and Meggi Rothermel (Minersville/Nativity BVM) scored a career-high 19 to lead Bloomsburg University to a 77-72 come-from-behind win over Indiana (PA) Friday night in women's college basketball action. Things did not look good for the Huskies in the opening minutes of the first half. After a brief 4-2 lead for Bloomsburg, the Indians rallied and pushed the lead to 23-13 with 8:26 to play in the first 20 minutes on a jumper by Sarah Zdesar. Making things worse for the Huskies was the fact that center Karen Yeasted (West Lawn/Holy Name) picked up three personal fouls in the first five minutes of action. The Huskies began their comeback by going on a 19-6 run which gave them a three-point lead, 32-29, with 2:17 left in the half. Bryan scored six points in the run with Rothermel adding five points for Bloomsburg. The teams then went into halftime tied at 34-34 after a jumper by the Indians Abbey Moore. In the second half, the Indians opened play by grabbing a two-point lead, but that would be their final lead of the night. The Huskies got a layup from Rothermel to tie the game at 36-36, then got a layup from Yeasted to take a 38-36 edge. IUP stayed close, though, and knotted the game at 44-44 on a three-pointer by Kara Taylor with 15:58 to play. The Huskies would then go on 7-0 run take a 53-46 lead with 13:29 left in the game. Later in the half a three-pointer by Rothermel, one of a career-high four on the night, gave the Huskies their biggest lead of the night, 60-51. However, IUP continued to battle and tied the game at 67-all with 2:24 to play. Seven points from the Indians' Zdesar keyed the 16-6 run. Bloomsburg took a 71-67 lead on a layup and two free throws by Yeasted with 1:15 to play. IUP got as close as one, 73-72, with 20 seconds to play, but the Huskies hit their free throws, going four for four in the final seconds to seal the win. Along with Bryan's 20 points, the senior added eight rebounds and two assists. Rothermel surpassed her previous career-high of 11 points by hitting six field goals, four of them three's, and going 3-3 from the foul line. Meaghan Roe also hit double digits with 16 and had eight rebounds. IUP was led by Moore's 21 points, while Zdesar scored 20 and Jacqui Martin 15. Bloomsburg, 1-1, will host Shippensburg Saturday at 1 p.m. IUP falls to 3-2 with the loss. |
