Bloomsburg Women Fall to MillersvilleMILLERSVILLE —Morgan Banks scored a team-high 20-points to lead Millersville University to a 76-71 win over Bloomsburg in women's basketball action Wednesday night. The game was the opener of PSAC Eastern Division play for both teams. Millersville jumped out to a 17-7 lead in the first seven minutes of play with Danielle Marshall netting five points and Diane Parker-Stewart four in the rally. The Marauders pushed the lead to 12 later in the half at 25-13 on a basket by Banks with 9:42 to play. The Huskies then battled back and cut the deficit to two points at the break. Leading the way for the Huskies in the comeback was Jen Bryan (Denver/Cocalico) who had nine points and Michelle Albanese four as Bloomsburg went into halftime trailing 38-36. Then later, a Kristy Garner jumper with 18:04 left gave Millersville an eight point lead, 44-36, its biggest lead in second half. However, a conventional three-point play by Michelle Albanese (Wilmington, DE/St. Mark's) pulled Bloomsburg to within one at 50-439 with 14:50 left. The Marauders' leading scorer, Gema Robles, then scored six points to push the Millersville lead to 58-51 at the 11:02 mark of the final period. But, a 6-0 run by the Huskies left the Huskies trailing by one again. Karen Yeasted (West Lawn/Holy Name) scored four of the six Bloomsburg points. Later in the half, the Huskies knotted the game at 64-64 on a three-pointer by Albanese with 5:14 to play. But, one of two free throws by Joni Mertz and baskets by Bnaks and Kris Garner gave the Marauders another five point edge at 69-64. Albanese then hit a three-pointer with 3:09 left and Yeasted got inside for a layup with 1:51 left to make it a two-point game at 71-69. After Banks hit two of four free throws in a 30-second span, Millersville held a 73-69 lead. Freshman Jamie Kaucza (Kingston/Wyoming Valley West) then scored a layup to make it 73-71 with 28 seconds left. Mertz then hit one of two from the foul line after being fouled by Kelly Burkhart to make it 74-71 with 26 seconds to play. Bloomsburg, though, missed a potential tying shot and Kristy Garner iced the game by hitting two free throws with eight seconds left. Banks, a transfer from Bloomsburg, finished with 20 points on 5-9 shooting from the floor and 10-12 from the foul line. Robles added 18 and Garner 14 for Millersville, now 10-5, 1-0 in the PSAC. Bloomsburg got a career-high 23 points and 12 rebounds from Yeasted after the senior shot 9-13 from the floor and 5-7 from the foul line. Albanese added 17 points, including a perfect 9-9 from the foul line. Albanese is now 21 for her last 21 from the free throw line covering three games.. Bryan chipped in with 14 and 11 rebounds, while Kauczka added 10. The Huskies got to 7-6, 0-1 in the PSAC. The Huskies host West Chester Saturday at 6 p.m. |
