Bloomsburg Rallies For Win over Cheyney
CHEYNEY —Michelle Albanese (Wilmington, DE/St. Mark's) hit two free throws with one second left in the game to lift the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team to a 60-59 win over Cheyney University Wednesday night. The win clinched third place in the PSAC Eastern Division for the Huskies and will send them to Millersville next week for the first round of the PSAC playoffs.
The Wolves, who trailed by six, 52-46, with 8:15 to play, went on an 11-2 run over a four minute stretch to take a 57-54 lead at the 4:18 mark on a pair of free throws Shivonne Augustine. The Huskies, though, took a 58-57 lead on back-to-back baskets by Dana Thompson (Pocono Lake/Allentown, NJ HS) with 2:05 to play. A jumper from Augustine with 1:41 to play gave the Wolves a one-point lead setting up the late game heroics for Albanese, the sophomore guard.
It is the second time in a week that Albanese has played the hero for Bloomsburg. A week ago in the home finale against Mansfield, Albanese sent the game into overtime with a three-pointer with seconds left, then scored 10 of the team's 13 points in the extra session to give the Huskies the win.
In the first half, Bloomsburg jumped out to an 11-point lead, 15-4, on a three-pointer by Meggi Rothermel (Minersville/Nativity BVM). The Huskies increased the lead to 15, 22-7, on another three-pointer by Rothermel before Cheyney closed the gap to five at the break. The Wolves hit backo-to-back three pointers in the final minute of the first half to cut the deficit to 34-29.
Karen Yeasted (West Lawn/Holy Name) scored a team-high 16 points and had 15 rebounds, while Thompson added 12 points and Rothermel 11. Albanese finished with seven points, including one three-pointer which tied the school record for made three's in a season at 54.
Cheyney was led by Augustine's 17 points, while Leighann Simons added 12.
