Bloomsburg Defeats Shippensburg in Women's Hoops

BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team defeated Shippensburg University 58-42. The win snaps an 11-game losing streak to the Lady Raiders. The Huskies have not defeated Shippensburg since the 1993-94 season. Jen Bryan (Denver/Cocalico) scored a career-high 28 points to lead the Huskies to the victory.
Both teams were plagued by poor shooting in the first half. The Huskies were 6-of-24 (25.0%) from the field, while the Lady Raiders were 4-of-27 (14.8%). Bloomsburg held a 22-11 advantage at the intermission. Jennifer Scaffidi (Turnersville, NJ/Washington Township) finished the half with all of Shippensburg's 11 points.
In the second half, the Huskies would increase their lead to 18 points with a three-point basket by Michelle Albanese (Wilmington, DE/St. Mark's). The Lady Raiders would cut that deficit back to 11 with a jumper by Emily Swingler (Columbia/Columbia) with 4:30 on the clock, but the Huskies would seal the game at the foul line. Bloomsburg was 9-for-10 from the free throw line in the final 4:11.
Foul shooting made the difference in the game with the Huskies making 26 shots from the line, while the Lady Raiders were just 1-of-7 from the line.
Bryan, who scored the career-high 28 points, finished with 12 rebounds for the double-double. She also added 5 assists. Albanese finished the game with 11 points for the Huskies. Karen Yeasted (West Lawn/Holy Name) finished with 13 rebounds and nine points.
For the Lady Raiders Scaffidi finished with 22 points and seven rebounds and Swingler finished with 13 points.
The Huskies improve to 2-1 on the season with the win and Shippensburg falls to 4-2.
Bloomsburg will be back in action on December 21st at Edinboro.
