Bloomsburg Downs Cheyney Behind 31 from Michelle Albanese

CHEYNEY —Michelle Albanese (Wilmington, DE/St. Mark's) scored a career-high 31 points to lead Bloomsburg University to an 81-70 win over Cheyney University Wednesday night in women's basketball action.
Albanese also hit six three-pointers in the game to push her season total to 58, a new Bloomsburg single-season record. She broke the mark of 56 she set a year ago and moved to within five of the school's career record for made three-point field goals.
After Cheyney scored the game's opening basket, the Huskies got the next 11 points with Jamie Kauczka (Kingston/Wyoming Valley West) netting five and Albanese four points. The wolves got back to within five points at 11-6, but the Huskies rattled off 11 of the next 13 points in the game to lead 20-8 with 8:51 to play in the game.
The Huskies later pushed the margin to 14 points, 19-15, when Albanese hit a three-pointer with 5:54 left in the half. Cheyney rallied and got back to within seven points when LaToya Showell hit a three-pointer to make it a 29-22 game. The Huskies, though, went into the locker room with a 13-point lead at 40-27.
Jen Berta (Lancaster/Lancaster Catholic) scored early in the second half to give the Huskies a 42-27 lead before the Wolves outscored Bloomsburg 18-10 over a six-minute stretch to cut the deficit to seven, 52-45, with 12:349 to play.
Bloomsburg pushed the lead back to double digits on two free throws each from Kauczka and Steph Weikel (Coal Township/Lourdes Regional) and a jumper from Stef Kline (Sinking Spring/Wilson) for a 58-45 lead with 10:03 to go in the game.
The Wolves could not get no closer than nine points the rest of the way with Albanese set her single-game scoring mark with a free throw with 54 seconds to play. Albanese scored 30 points in a game against Caldwell earlier this year.
Albanese finished 10 of 15 from the floor, six of nine from three-point range and also added five rebounds and had one assist for the Huskies, 10-11, 3-3 in the PSAC East. Kauczka also hit double figures with 15 points, while Kline dished out a career-high 11 assists and also grabbed seven rebounds.
Cheyney, 4-16, 0-6 in the PSAC East, got 15 points from Fanta Sissiko and 11 from Showell.
The Huskies host West Chester Saturday at 6 p.m. in their next game.
