Huskies Down East Stroudsburg in Women's Basketball

BLOOMBURG—Jamie Kauckza (Kingston/Wyoming Valley West) scored a team-high 17 points to lead Bloomsburg University to a 72-62 win over East Stroudsburg in women's college basketball action Saturday night.

The teams were sluggish in the early going and were tied 8-8 after the first eight minutes of the game. Stef Kline (Sinking Spring/Wilson) then hit a jumper to make it 10-8 in favor of Bloomsburg that keyed a 9-2 run and gave the Huskies a 19-10 lead. After East Stroudsburg cut the margin down to seven, 21-14, the Huskies held the Warriors scoreless for the next four minutes while increasing the lead to 28-14. East Stroudsburg's Niki Cox finally broke the scoreless run with a three-pointer with 2:17 to play in the half.

Bloomsburg started the second half leading by nine, 31-22, but then saw the Warriors rattle off the first 13 points of the second half to take a 35-31 lead with 16:22 to play. Maryellen Onofre scored five of the 13 points for the Warriors.

Kauczka stopped the run connecting for a traditional three-point play with 16:06 to play. The Huskies then regained the lead, 36-35, on a jumper by Jen Berta (Lancaster/Lancaster Catholic) after an East Stroudsburg turnover. After Cox hit a jumper for East Stroudsburg to give the visitors a one-point edge, Berta hit another jumper in the lane to give the Huskies the lead for good at 38-37. Kline then scored eight points for the Huskies in a four-minute stretch as Bloomsburg extended its lead to 53-41 with 9:24 to play.

East Stroudsburg got back to within nine points, 53-44, on a free throw by Shelly Garlach, but back-to-back baskets by Nikki Duncan (Lancaster/Hempfield) and Kline gave Bloomsburg a 13-point lead at 57-44.

The Warriors would get no closer than eight the rest of the way, while the Huskies equaled their biggest lead of the game, 14-points, at 69-55, on a basket by Kelly Burkhart (Sayre/Athens) with 2:33 to play.

Kauczka finished with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Kline added a career-high 16 points and three assists for Bloomsburg, now 9-9, 2-2 in the PSAC East. In addition, Michelle Albanese (Wilmington, DE/St. Mark's) added 12 points for the Huskies.

East Stroudsburg, 4-12, 1-2 in the PSAC East, got 19 points from Cox, while Onofre added 15 points.

Bloomsburg is back in action on Wednesday at Kutztown starting at 6 p.m.
