Bloomsburg Downs Mansfield in Women's Basketball

MANSFIELD —Freshman Dominque Deveaux (Coatesville/Coatesville) scored 16 points to lead Bloomsburg University to a 73-68 win over Mansfield University Wednesday night.

The Huskies, 13-12, 6-4 in the PSAC East, held an early 12-9 lead after Jamie Kauczka (Kingston/Wyoming Valley West) hit a layup with 14:17 left in the first half. Later, with the score tied 21-21, Bloomsburg went on a 12-2 run to open a 33-23 lead with 3:51 to go in the half. Jen Berta (Lancaster/Lancaster Catholic) keyed the rally for the Huskies with four of the 12 points.

In the second half, the Huskies held 12 point leads on two different occasions, the last time coming on a jumper from Michelle Albanese (Wilmington, DE/St. Mark's) with 16:29 left in the game. The Mountaineers then rallied and cut the deficit to four points after a layup from Alison Tagliaferri with 12:44 to go. Bloomsburg then got back to back baskets from Berta and Deveaux in a 10-second span with Kauczka following up with a layup a minute later for a 10-point Huskie' lead at 58-48.

Mansfield rallied once more and used a 15-7 run to climb within two at 65-63 with 4:59 to play. After both teams missed several scoring chances, Bloomsburg's Brittany McLean (Emporium/Cameron County) scored at the 2:29 mark to go up 67-63. After a missed shot from Mansfield, Albanese hit a jumper for a 69-63 lead with 1:37 go. Then, in the final minute, Bloomsburg connected on 4-6 from the foul line to win by five, 73-68.

Along with Deveaux's 16 points for Bloomsburg, Berta and Albanese added 12 points, while Kauczka chipped in with 11 points and eight rebounds.

Tagliaferri led Mansfield, 13-15, 4-6 in the PSAC East, with 16 points, while Jessica Pfeiffer and Jessica Uhrich scored 14 points each.

Bloomsburg will host Kutztown on Saturday starting at 6 p.m.
