Huskies Fall to Millersville in PSAC East Opener

BLOOMSBURG— Millersville place three players in double figures and went on to beat Bloomsburg, 65-53, in women's college basketball action Wednesday night.

Millersville improves to 9-6, 1-0 in the PSAC East, while the Huskies fall to 6-8, 0-1 in the PSAC East.

Millersville jumped out to a 13-3 lead early in the first half, led by Danielle Marshall's nine points. Bloomsburg then rallied and the deficit to just one, 15-14, on a pair of free throws by Stef Kline (Sinking Spring/Wilson) with 11:55 to go in the first half. The Maruaders then built the lead back up to nine, 27-18, on a three-pointer by Jayeneca Bailey with 8:40 to play in the opening half. Then, after the Huskies cut the margin to five, 28-23, the Marauders closed the half with an 11-2 run to lead39-25 at the break.

In the second half, the Huskies outscored the Marauders, 28-26, but were unable to regain the lead after the 15-point halftime deficit. Bloomsburg cut the lead to 11 with 16:24 left to play on a three-pointer by Michelle Albanese (Wilmington, DE/St. Mark's), but Millersville increased their lead back to 14 when Joni Mertz hit a three-pointer of her own on the next Marauder possession.

Another three-pointer by Albanese cut the lead to 12 at the 11:10 mark, but the Marauders responded with two consecutive baskets to increase their lead to 16. The Huskies once again chipped away at the Millersville lead, trailing by 12, but the Marauders connected on 4-4 from the free throw line to increase it back to 16. Dominique Deveax (Coatesville /Coatesville) scored five points in the final minute, but the Marauders held on for the 65-53 win.

Albanese led all scorers with 19 points, including four three-pointers. She also chipped in two assists and four steals, while Stef Kline (Sinking Spring/Wilson) added four assists to go a long with seven points. Deveax was 4-9 from the floor, scoring 12 points in the game. Freshmen Nikki Duncan (Lancaster/Hempfield) led the team in rebounds with 10, while Kline chipped in nine boards for Bloomsburg.

A trio of Marauders, Kristy Garner, Danielle Marshall and Joni Mertz, all scored 14 points in the game, while Garner also led the team in rebounds with nine.

The Huskies will travel to West Chester on Saturday, to take on the Golden Rams in PSAC East action. The game will begin at 1:00 p.m.
