Bloomsburg Falls to Kutztown in Women's Basketball

KUTZTOWN —Monique Boykins scored a team-high 15 points and grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds to lead Kutztown to a 50-47 win over Bloomsburg in women's basketball action Wednesday night.

After three early ties in the game, the last at 7-7, the Huskies went on a 5-0 run to lead 12-7. Dominique Deveaux (Coatesville/Coatesville) hit a jumper and three-pointer for Bloomsburg. The Golden Bears then went on a 6-1 run of their own for the fourth tie of the game at 13-13 with 9:38 to play in the half.

Bloomsburg then put together a 9-0 run to lead 22-13 with 4:05 to go in the half. Deveaux hit two jumpers with Jen Berta (Lancaster/Lancaster Catholic) adding a layup and Stef Kline (Sinking Spring/Wilson) a three-pointer.

After a Kutztown time out, the Golden Bears ended the run with a jumper at the 3:36 mark stopping a six- minute scoring drought.

Bloomsburg led 28-23 at halftime, but saw Kutztown scored seven points in the first three minutes of the half to knot the score at 30-30. Then, with the teams tied at 32-32, Kutztown grabbed its first lead since early in the first half when Boykins hit a layup at the 15:15 mark.

The Huskies came back and regained the lead at 35-34 on a three-point play from Nikki Duncan (Lancaster/Hempfield) with 12:49 to play, then extended the margin to six points, 44-36 on a jumper by Michelle Albanese (Wilmington, DE/St. Mark's).

Kutztown got back-to-back baskets from Carolyn Francehtti and Amanda Zinobile to get within two, 44-42, with 5:47 left in the game. After Deveaux hit one of two from the foul line for a three-point Bloomsburg lead, Boykin scored to make it 45-44. Jamie Kauczka (Kingston/Wyoming Valley West) then scored for the Huskies to make it 47-44 at the 2:28 mark.

The Golden Bears then got consecutive baskets from Boykins and Jess Brady to take a 48-47 lead with 1:19 to go.

Kutztown gave the Huskies a couple of opportunities to tie or go-ahead after missing three straight free throws in the final minute. But, Bloomsburg could not take advantage, while the Golden Bears finally hit two free throws with 21 seconds left for a three-point lead. Kutztown then followed Kuczka with two seconds left to prevent the three point shot. But Kauczka missed the front end of the one and one with Kutztown rebounding to end the game.

Deveaux was the only Bloomsburg (9-10, 2-3 PSAC East) player in double figures with 16 points, while Kauczka scored eight and had 12 rebounds. Leading scorer Michelle Albanese was limited to three points on the night.

Boykin was the only player in double figures for Kutztown (5-12, 2-2 PSAC East) with 15 points.
