Bloomsburg Women's Basketball Tops Cheyney

BLOOMSBURG—Bloomsburg University's Jamie Kauczka (Kingston/Wyoming Valley West) scored 20 points and Gabrielle Miskinis (Lewistown/Lewistown) and Meggi Rothermel (Minersville/Nativity BVM) chipped in with 14 a piece to fuel the Huskies to a 71-55 win over Cheyney in women's basketball.
The Huskies took an early 9-8 lead on a Meggi Rothermel jumper with 13:45 remaining in the first half and never relinquished it. Bloomsburg led by as many as nine points in the first half but the Wolves chipped away and pulled to within 29-27 on a Ranisha Childress three-pointer with 3:27 to go. The Huskies responded with a 6-0 run sparked by a Kauczka three point play after a foul and led 37-32 at half.
Bloomsburg opened the second half with back-to-back lay-ups by Kauczka and later extended their lead to 53-40 on a Dana Thompson (Pocono Lake/Allentown, NJ) three-point play. The Huskies put the game away midway through the second half, extending their lead to 15 with 5:32 remaining on a Kauczka lay-up. Gabrielle Miskinis added the final two Bloomsburg baskets on back-to-back jumpers to give the Huskies a 71-53 lead.
Michele Albanese (Wilmington, DE/St. Mark's) added seven assists and six points and Dana Thompson tossed in seven points for the Huskies.
Cheyney's Ranisha Childress led all scorers with 23 points while Ngozi Utti added nine points in a losing effort.
Bloomsburg improved to 9-5, 3-0 PSAC East with the win while Cheyney fell to 2-15, 0-3 PSAC East. The win was the fifth straight for Bloomsburg.
The Huskies return to action on Wednesday as they travel to Mansfield to face the Mountaineers.
