Bloomsburg Downs East Stroudsburg in Women's Basketball

BLOOMSBURG—Bloomsburg University placed four players in double figures, including a team-high 20 points from Tiff Metzler (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg), as it defeated East Stroudsburg, 90-76, in women's basketball action Wednesday night.

The team's traded leads for the first eight minutes of the game with neither team holding more than a three-point lead. Then, with the Huskies trailing by one at 18-17, Jen Berta (Lancaster/Lancaster Catholic) scored at the 11:51 mark to give Bloomsburg the lead for good. The basket was the start of a 21-4 run for the Huskies which would see them extend their lead to 16 points, 38-22, with 4:49 to play in the opening half. Keying the big run for the Huskies was seven points from Gabe Miskinis (Lewistown/Lewistown) and four from Metzler.

In the second half the Huskies came out strong and scored the first 10 points of the half to lead by 24, 56-32, with 16:29 left in the game. Metzler came up with five of Bloomsburg's points in the rally.

Bloomsburg maintained a near 20-point lead for most of the next 10 minutes before the Warriors made a late rally to get closer.

Niki Cox hit four, three-pointers for the Warriors in a five-minute stretch to bring East Stroudsburg within 10 points, 81-71, with 2:32 to play. However, that would be as close at the Warriors would get. Jamie Kauczka (Kingston/Wyoming Valley West) scored five of Bloomsburg's final points as the Huskies hung on for the 14-point victory.

Metzler finished with 20 points and six rebounds, while Miskinis added 17 points, five rebounds and five assists with Meggi Rothermel (Minersville/Nativity BVM) adding 16 points. In addition, Kauczka chipped in with 15 points and eight boards.

Cox led all scorers with 36 points, while Onofre added 10 points for the Warriors, now 5-8, 0-1 in the PSAC East.

Bloomsburg, 5-5, 1-0 in the PSAC East, will host IUP on Saturday at 1 p.m.
