Bloomsburg Downs Kutztown in Women's Basketball

BLOOMSBURG— Michelle Albanese (Wilmington, DE/St. Mark's) scored 19 points to lead four players in double figures as the Huskies defeated Kutztown University, 75-53, Wednesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action.

In the opening minutes the teams were locked in a tight battle and were tied at 6-6 with 16:40 to play. The Huskies then went on an 8-0 run to go up by eight, 14-6, on a couple of three pointers by Michelle Albanese and Gabe Miskinis (Lewistown/Lewistown) and two free throws by Meggi Rothermel (Minversville/Nativity BVM). Later, after the Golden Bears cut the lead to three, 14-11, the Huskies turned three Kutztown turnovers into nine quick points. The points came on two three's from Miskinis and one from Albanese in a 30-second span to give Bloomsburg a 23-11 lead with 12:37 to play in the half.

The Huskies continued with its strong defense and red-hot shooting the rest of the half and used a 13-4 run to push the lead to as many as 26 points, 47-21, with 4:37 to play. Albanese, who did not miss a shot in the first half (6-6) scored seven of the Huskies' points in the run.

Bloomsburg finished the first 20-minutes shooting 56 percent from the floor, including 61.5 percent from three point range and forcing 17 Kutztown turnovers.

Early in the second half the Huskies pushed the lead to 27 points, 54-27, on a layup from Mikinis. The Huskies maintained the lead of 20 or more points for much of the second half. Albanese finished perfect a perfect 7-7 from the floor, including 5-5 from three-point range for her 19 to lead the Huskies.. Gabe Miskinis added 16 points, while Rothermel chipped in with 11 and Jamie Kauczka (Kingston/Wyoming Valley West) 10.

Mercedes Van Wagner led the Golden Bears, now 10-12, 3-5 in the PSAC East, with 17 points, while Jess Brady added 16 and Rachel Weidensaul 11.

Bloomsburg, now 11-8, 5-3 in the PSAC East, will visit Cheyney on Saturday at 1 p.m.
