Bloomsburg Falls to Mansfield in Women's Basketball

MANSFIELD —The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team saw its five-game winning streak come to end Wednesday night with a 72-65 loss to Mansfield in PSAC Eastern Division action. The loss also snapped a 37-game winning streak over the Mountaineers.

Bloomsburg held the early edge in the game, 8-2, behind four points from Dana Thompson (Pocono Lake/Allentown, NJ). The Mountaineers rallied and used an 11-0 run, highlighted by five points from Tiffany Taylor to take a 13-8 lead with 12:37 left in the first half. Mansfield extended its lead to 22-13 with 6:02 to play on a layup from Jessica Uhrich and went into halftime with a 12-point edge, 31-19. The Huskies were hurt by poor shooting in the first half connecting on just 22 percent of hits shots (6-27), while Mansfield shot nearly 54 percent from the floor (14-26).

The Huskies struggled in the opening minutes of the second half and quickly fell behind by 23 points, 46-23, after a three-pointer from Laura Scordino with 16 minutes left in the game.

Bloomsburg fought back to with 12 points, 48-36, at the 11 minute mark after a 13-2 run of its own. Meggi Rothermel (Minersville/Nativity BVM) had five points and Michelle Albanese (Wilmington, DE/St. Mark's) four in the rally. The Huskies further chipped away at the lead and got the deficit to just four points, 57-53 with 3:27 to play, on back-to-back three-pointers from Rothermel within a 40-second span.

Mansfield though would not the Huskies get any closer and pushed the lead back to 10 points, 64-54, after a layup from Urhich with 1:45 to play. The Mountaineers then hit all eight of its free throws down the stretch to knock the Huskies from the ranks of the unbeaten in PSAC Eastern Division play.

Bloomsburg, now 9-6, 3-1 in the PSAC East, got 16 points from Thompson and Rothermel, while Albanese and Jamie Kauczka (Kingston/Wyoming Valley West) added 12 points each.

Mansfield, 6-10, 1-2 in the PSAC East, was led by 18 points and 13 rebounds from Uhrich, while Alison Tagliaferri chipped in with 17 points.

The Huskies are idle till Feb. 2nd when they host West Chester at 5:30 p.m.
