Huskies Rally for Win

BLOOMSBURG-Freshman Dana Wieller (Bethlehem/Liberty) scored a game-high 18 points and the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team rallied from a 12-point second half deficit to post a 57-48 win over West Chester on Saturday afternoon.

The Huskies started quickly in the game racing out to a 14-5 lead in the first six minutes of the game. After an opening three-pointer from the Golden Rams Dominque Adams, Bloomsburg scored 14 of the next 16 points with Wieller getting eight of the 14, including two three-pointers.

West Chester then rallied and tied the game at 20-20 after a pair of free throws with 8:17 to go in the half. The Golden Rams later used a 12-0 run to lead by 12 with just under 10 seconds left in the half before a layup from Lauren Biczelewski (West Chester/Bayard Rustin) at the buzzer cut the deficit to 10 at the break. The bucket also snapped a scoring drought of over eight and half minutes for the Huskies to end the half.

The second period started with the Golden Rams again pushing the lead to 12 points, 38-26, with 16:09 to play. Bloomsburg then began chipping away and trimmed the margin to five, 40-35, on a three-pointer from Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley).

Later, with West Chester leading by seven, 44-37 with nine minutes to play, the Huskies tightened up defensively and put together a 9-0 run to grab their first lead since the first half on a Lauren Ellis (Bangor/Bangor) baseline jumper. Wieller then followed with a three and Ellis a layup to suddenly make it a six-point lead Bloomsburg lead with 4:41 to go. After a free throw from Alyssa Flanagan (Freeland/Hazleton Area) made it a 52-45 Bloomsburg lead with 3:21 to go, the Golden Rams finally snapped a nearly seven minute scoring drought when Mary Kate Serratelli hit a three-pointer with 2:17 to go to make it a 52-48 advantage for the Huskies.

Bloomsburg, though, would hold the Golden Rams scoreless the remainder of the game capping the victory with two free throws from Wieller with 21 seconds to go.

Wieller finished with 18 points and four rebounds, while Oxenrider scored 16 for the Huskies, now 10-4, 2-0 in the PSAC East. West Chester was led in scoring by Renata Neal and Serratelli with eight points each.

Bloomsburg will host East Stroudsburg on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
