Huskies Fall to West Chester in Overtime

Box Score

WEST CHESTER-Sophomore guard Kelsey Gallagher (East Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg South) scored a game-high 26 points but it wasn't enough as Bloomsburg University fell to West Chester University in overtime, 74-71 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East women's basketball action on Saturday at the Hollinger Fieldhouse.

West Chester got out to a 10-4 lead at the 15:48 mark but the Huskies (14-8, 6-4) battled back, tying the score at 12-apiece after an 8-2 run. The Golden Rams went back on top, gaining a 21-14 lead with less than 11 minutes to go before Bloomsburg narrowed the margin to three points after a three-pointer by Gallagher. West Chester got up on the Huskies again, taking a 27-21 lead with over six minutes to play in the first half. But Bloomsburg refused to get down by too much, going on a 13-6 run closing out the half, capped by a layup by Gallagher as time expired to go on top 34-33.

After the Golden Rams (15-7, 5-4) took a one-point lead 31 seconds into the second half, the Huskies responded with a three-pointer by freshman guard Jordan Pasik (Gilbertsville/St. Pius X) just seven seconds later, going on top 37-35. The Huskies remained on top for much of the second half, leading by as many as six points after a three-pointer by freshman forward Kayla Oxenrider (Ashland/Tri-Valley) with 2:44 remaining.

The Golden Rams capitalized on Bloomsburg turnovers and took a 66-65 lead with 1:57 remaining. After a missed three-point attempt and a foul by West Chester, Gallagher went to the foul line and connected on both of her foul shots to give the Huskies a 67-66 lead with 43 seconds left in regulation. West Chester would get their chance, however, and made one-of-two foul shots with 29 seconds left to tie the game. After a missed layup by the Huskies, West Chester's final shot was off and the game went to overtime.

The Huskies kept West Chester off the scoreboard for the first minute of the extra period, but fell behind on a Janelle Garber layup and never led in overtime, eventually falling by three points.

Renata Neal led the Golden Rams with 18 points and nine rebounds while Garber scored 17 points. Gallagher connected on 9-of-14 shots, including 4-of-8 from three-point range, playing the entire game. Her 26 points led four other Huskies who reached double-figures, including Pasik who had 10 points and nine rebounds.

The Huskies return the court and continue to battle for position in the PSAC Eastern Division when they host Shippensburg next Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Raiders victory over East Stroudsburg today gave them a 5-4 record in conference play as they keep their three-way tie with West Chester and Cheyney for the fourth spot in the East. Bloomsburg is currently in the third slot.
