Millersville Advances with Win Over Bloomsburg in NCAA Tennis
BLOOMSBURG—The Millersville University women's tennis team advanced to the NCAA Division II Round of 16 championships on Saturday with a 5-4 win over Bloomsburg University.
The Marauders took two of three in doubles with the number one team of Steph Eckhart and Katie Opilo winning by an 8-2 score.
In singles play, the Marauders took a 3-1 lead in the match with a win by Christy Lilli at number four, 6-3, 6-1. Bloomsburg rallied and tied the score at 3-3 with a win at number one from Iida Hokkanen, who rallied from a set down, to win 1-6, 6-3, 6-0 and Lauren Colfer at number five, who won in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5.
Millersville went back in front 4-3 with a hard fought win at number two singles. Opilo took the opening set 6-1, then held a 5-2 lead in the second set, but dropped five straight match points to Bloomsburg's Emily Murphy with Murphy pulling out a 7-6 win. In the third set, Opilo won by a 6-1 score to get a point for the Marauders.
The Huskies momentarily tied the match at 4-4 with a win at number six from Tracy Nissenbaum who took a three-setter, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3.
But at number three singles, Millersville's Morgan Burdette pulled out a win. Burdette took the opening set against Lindsey Wyckoff, 6-4, before Wyckoff rallied from down 5-4 to win 7-5 in the second set. Burdette then won the third set 6-3 to give Millersville the victory.
The Marauders (12-3) advance to the NCAA championship round next week in Orlando, FL. Bloomsburg ends its season at 13-7.
