Women's Tennis Competes at ITA Event
BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University women's tennis team competed at the ITA East Regional tennis tournament over the weekend, dominating the “B” flight action.
Freshman Torie Cunningham (Greenlawn, NY, Harborfields), seeded first and Lauren Colfer (Philadelphia, St. Basil Academy), seeded second, both advanced to the semifinals of the “B” flight in singles, where they played against one another. Cunningham won, 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the title match where she beat Trish Ubil from Philadelphia University, 6-1, 6-1. Tracy Nissenbaum (Allentown, Sagemont, FL) made it to the quarter finals where she lost a close match 7-5, 6-3, (10-8).
In the women's “B” doubles Colfer and her partner Emily Murphy (Montgomery, Methacton), seeded first, glided through their matches with easy wins over Georgian Court University, Clarion University, and Dowling College. The Huskies then defeated Bryant College, 8-4 to win the “B” Flight Doubles.
In the “A” flight of the tournament, Iida Hokkanen (Helsinki, Finland), seeded second, advanced to the quarterfinals where she lost a tight match against Solomon, from Bryant College, 6-4, 7-5.
Emily Murphy won her first round match against Tina Schmukavich of Queens College, 6-0, 6-1, and then lost to Ashley Michaux 6-2, 6-2, who was the fourth seed from Slippery Rock University.
Hokkanen and partner Emily Pratt (New Hope, New Hope-Solebury), a junior transfer, advanced to the quarterfinals in the “A” doubles action, where they lost to Philadelphia University in a very close match, 9-8, (7-5).
Bloomsburg hosts East Stroudsburg on October 15th at 3 pm.
