BLOOMSBURG—Virginia Tech's Eric Hall posted an 11-3 win to help lead the Hokies to a 23-21, come-from-behind win over the Bloomsburg University Huskies Saturday afternoon at the Nelson Field House. Hall's win helped Virginia Tech rally from a 21-15 deficit with two bouts left in the match.
Virginia Tech improves to 2-1-1, 1-1-1 in the Eastern Wrestling League, while the Huskies fall to 0-2, 0-2 in the EWL.
Starting at 184 pounds, the Hokies' Scott Justus jumped out to a 3-1 lead after two periods with an escape and a takedown. The Huskies' Smith managed just one escape in each of the second and third periods, while Justus posted a takedown to go up 5-2, then earned one point for riding time for a 6-2 win and a 3-0 lead in the match for Virginia Tech.
In the 197-pound match, the Huskies' Todd Hockenbroch used three takedowns and several escapes to grab a 7-2 lead over Wes Cummings after two periods. In the third period, Cummings came alive with an escape and a takedown to pull within 7-5 with 30 seconds left. Cummings, though, was unable to turn Hockenbroch giving the Huskies the win and tying the match at 3-3.
At heavyweight, Bloomsburg's Pat Spirelli and Virginia Tech's Ben Fisher were scoreless in the first period, with Spirelli getting the first point of the bout with an escape to start the second period. The score remained 1-0 until the start of the third when Fisher escaped to start the period. Fisher was then called for stalling for the second time with thirty seconds left which gave Spirelli a 2-1 lead. Fisher could not get Spirelli down giving the Huskies a 2-1 win in the bout and a 6-3 lead in the match.
The teams each forfeited one of the next two matches, the Huskies winning at 125 pounds with Brock Hite and the Hokies at 133 with Jeremy Gaysek leaving Bloomsburg with a 12-9 lead going into the 141-pound match.
At 141 pounds, the Hokies Sean Gray, ranked fourth in the country, showed why he is ranked so high. Gray dominated the match from the start getting three takedowns in the first, then opening a 13-1 lead in the second. Gray then earned a pin with 19 seconds left in the second period giving the Hokies a 15-12 lead.
Bloomsburg's George Carter, ranked 11th in the country, got all he could handle from Brent Rider at 149 pounds, but came away with a 6-3 win. Carter had two takedowns and a reversal to get the victory and tie the match at 15-15.
At 157 pounds, the Huskies' Ed Hockenberry dominated the action in the first period, jumping out to a 7-2 lead. With 40 seconds left in the first period, Hockenberry got Wilson on his back and worked on him till he got a pin with 20 seconds left. The pin, Hockenberry's sixth of the year, gave the Huskies a 21-15 advantage with just two bouts left.
At 165 pounds, number five ranked Chris Martin from Virginia Tech dominated the Huskies' Hunter Guenot, ranked 16th, from start to finish getting a takedown in each period and coming away with a 10-0 win. The major decision brought the Hokies to within two points in the match, 21-19, setting the stage for the deciding last match.
In the day's final bout, Hall,, ranked 15th in the country, had the early advantage with a first period takedown of the 18th ranked Shults. Hall then opened the second period with an escape after Shults chose the top position to start the action to go up 3-0. Leading 4-0 at the start if the third, Shults escaped to start the period, then got a takedown with 56 seconds remaining. Shults then allowed an escape looking for the tying takedown. But Hall got a takedown and three backpoints and one point for riding time to make the final bout score 11-3 giving the Hokies the match.
Bloomsburg returns to action Tuesday, Jan. 9 hosting Edinboro at 7:30 p.m.
