Rutgers head coach John Sacchi picked up his 400th career victory with a 26-15
win over Bloomsburg in wrestling action tonight.
After two narrow losses, the Scarlet Knights used a pin from Andrew Roy (Wall,
NJ) and a major decision win from Ryan McGrath (Columbia, NJ) to secure the
victory. With the win, RU improves to 4-7, while Bloomsburg falls to 1-10. Rutgers fell into a 3-0 hole after the opening match, as BJ Mikeska registered
a 6-0 win over freshman Chris Ressa (Andover, NJ) at 157. At 165, RUs
Bryon Lauer (Belvidere, NJ) used two, first-period takedowns to register a 7-5
win, tying the match at 3-3. At 174 pounds, Roy, filling in for regular starter Justin Haskins (Cliffwood
Beach, NJ), made quick work of Bloomsburgs Tom Anderson. Roy looked strong
from the first whistle and ended the match at the 1:36 mark by pinning Anderson
to give Rutgers a 9-3 lead after two matches. The Scarlet Knights increased
their lead to 12-3 following a 4-0 win by Tom Tanis (Oak Ridge, NJ). Tanis has
now won 14 matches in a row, dating back to the Midland Championships. At 197, McGrath opened a 5-2 lead after the first period and then added eight
unanswered points for a 13-2 major decision win over Andrew Ludlow, a win which
pushed RUs lead to 16-3 after just four matches. At 285, Bloomsburgs
Tony Milone registered a 7-4 win over Jon Fleming (South Orange, NJ) to cut
the lead to 16-6 with four matches remaining. Brock Hite, Bloomsburgs top wrestler with a 13-5 record, improved with
a 3-1 win over Andrew Uhrlass (Bound Brook, NJ) at 125 pounds. At 133, freshman
Andrew Tilles (Devon, PA) was tied at 2-2 at the end of the first period, but
scored seven unanswered points in the second to take a 9-2 lead en route to
a 12-3, major decision win. The match closed with a pin at 141 pounds by Bloomsburgs Adam Castner
and a forfeit win by sophomore Greg Austin (Seaville, NJ) at 149, who picked
up his team-leading 24th win of the season. Tonights match will be featured on Piscataway Television on a tape-delay
basis. The contest will be broadcast on Friday, February 8 at 11:00 p.m., Saturday,
February 9 at 10:00 p.m. and Sunday, February 10 at 8:00 p.m. Match-by-Match Results |
