West Virginia Downs Bloomsburg in Eastern Wrestling League Matchup

BLOOMSBURG--Sixth-ranked West Virginia University swept all 10 matches to defeat Bloomsburg University, 34-0 in college wrestling action Saturday night.

The match started at 197 pounds with the Mountaineers' Adrian Thompson winning 11-5. Thompson controlled most of the match and recorded five takedowns, including four in the final period to post the win by decision.

At heavyweight, the Huskies' Tony Milone and West Virginia's Brent Miller went toe-to-toe with each other for three periods with Miller winning 3-2. Milone led 1-0 going into the third period after getting an escape to start the second period. In the third, Miller recorded an escape of his own to tie the score, then got a takedown with 1:27 left to get the win.

In the 125-pound match, the Mountaineers' Seth Lisa (#19) posted a 7-5 win over the Huskies' Brock Hite. With Lisa holding a 5-4 lead going into the final period, Lisa got a takedown to make it a 7-4 score. Hite escaped with less than 30 seconds to go to get within two, but could not record the match-tying takedown.

At 133 pounds, the Mountaineers' Troy Forte used two first period takedowns to post a 6-1 win over Justin Haupt. The win gave West Virginia a 12-0 lead after four matches.

In the 141-pound match, West Virginia's Shane Cuanan (#12) won by technical fall over Bloomsburg's Mark Piermattei in 6:14. Cuanan got seven takedowns and two near falls to post the win by a 21-5 margin.

In the night's next match Mountaineers' Billy Smith (#6) posted a win 10-2 over the Huskies' Brad Forbes at 149 pounds. Smith took control of the match in the middle frame getting two takedowns and one escape to take a 9-1 lead heading into the final period.

One of the night's most exciting matches came right down to the wire between the Huskies' George Carter (#12) and West Virginia's Matt Lebe with Lebe coming out on top 7-6. With the score tied 4-4 in the third period, Carter got a takedown with 24 seconds left to go up 6-4. Lebe then escaped with 10 seconds remaining and got a takedown with one-second left to rally for the 7-6 victory.

At 165 pounds, the Mountaineer's Tom McMath (#9) posted a 17-8 win over Bloomsburg's Ryan Garner. McMath used eight takedowns in the match to post the win.

At 174 pounds, the nation's top-ranked and defending national champion, Greg Jones (#1), was taken to the limit by Bloomsburg's Hunter Guenot (#16) with Jones winning 5-3. Jones did not secure victory until getting a takedown with 30 seconds left in the match. Jones is now 15-0 on the year, while Guenot had a 13-match winning streak snapped.

The night's final bout saw West Virginia's Ryan Wilman (#17) down Chad Hoare, 9-4. Wilman got a takedown and an escape in the third period to seal the win.

Bloomsburg is at Clarion Friday, Jan. 17th.
