CLARION —Clarion University defeated Bloomsburg University in college wrestling action with the match decided by near-fall points after the teams battled to an 18-18 tie. Clarion edged the Huskies in the tie-breaking criteria, 8-7.

The match came down to a battle of the heavyweights with the Huskies holding a slim 18-14 margin. Clarion's John Testa jumped out quickly in the match recording three first period takedowns. In the second period, Testa nearly won the match with a pin for the Golden Eagles, but the call came just after the buzzer. In the third period Testa was able to gain enough points to win by major fall and knotting the score at 18-18. After the first several criteria were even (technical falls and major decisions), the Golden Eagles were awarded the win by getting eight near-fall points to seven for the Huskies.

The Huskies got things going with a win at 125-pounds from Brock Hite who was a 2-0 winner over Peter Derstine. Clarion then posted win in three straight matches to go up by an 11-3 scored.

Bloomsburg rallied with four straight wins to take an 18-11 lead. George Carter posted a major decision over Jeremy Reitz 10-2, then Ryan Garner, at 165, won a 5-4 overtime, tie breaker decision over Clarion's Chris Horning.

The Huskies continued with Hunter Guenot notching a 19-3 technical fall at 6:53 over David Gardner at 174. The run finished with the Huskies' Chad Hoare gaining a 9-5 decision over Clarion's Eric Spence at 184.

At 197 pounds, Clarion's Eric Mausser, ranked seventh in the country, beat Andy Ludlow, 7-0, to make it 18-14 and setting up the dramatic finish.

Clarion improves to 7-2 for the year, 1-0 in the EWL, while the Huskies fall to 4-3, 1-2 in the EWL. The Huskies host Virginia Tech Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Nelson Field House.
