Carter and Guneot Advance at EWL's

HUNGTINGTON, WV —Bloomsburg University wrestlers George Carter and Hunter Guenot each won their opening round matches Saturday at the 2003 Eastern Wrestling League championships being held at West Virginia University.

At 157 pounds, Carter won by major decision over Josh Ging of Cleveland State, 19-5, to advance to the quarterfinals on Sunday. In the quarterfinals, Carter will face Justin Nestor of Pitt, a 2-1 winner over Eric Ring of Edinboro.

At 174 pounds, Hunter Guenot won by a score of 3-1 to advance to quarterfinals. He will face the winner of the Matt Klinger (Cleveland State)/Carl Fonhofer (Pitt) match. Looming ahead for Guenot is top-seed and defending national champion Greg Jones of West Virginia. Jones beat Guenot, 3-1, in a match earlier this season at Bloomsburg.

In other matches, Mike Collins lost to Seth Lisa of West Virginia, 17-4 in his first round match. Collins will now face Peter Derstine of Clarion in the consolation round. Justin Haupt at 133 pounds lost to Phil Mansueto of Cleveland State, 9-3. He will now face Justin Owens of Lock Haven in the consolation bracket.

At 141 pounds Mark Piermattei lost to Shane Cunanan of West Virginia, 20-7. Piermattei wil face Jim Miller of Virginia Tech in the first round of consolations Sunday.

Brad Forbes, at 149 pounds, lost to Reed Carpenter of Virginia Tech, 10-6 in his first match of the tournament. Forbes will face Jim Perry of Clarion in the consolation round.

At 165 pounds, Ryan Garner lost to Tom McMatch of West Virginia, 17-7, in the first round. Garner will take on Chris Horning of Clarion in the consolation round.

At 184 pounds, Chad Hoare lost to Alex Clemson of Edinboro, 9-4, in an opening round match. Hoare will now face Greg Osbeck of Pitt in the consolation round.

At 197 pounds, Ryan Chulada was pinned by David Shunamon of Edinboro in 5:42 and will go on to face Adrian Thompson of West Virginia in the consolation round.

Tony Milone, at heavyweight, defaulted due to injury in 1:23. His status for his matchup with Steve Itterly of Lock Haven on Sunday is not known.

Action will resume Sunday at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. The finals are set for Sunday night at 7 p.m.
