George Carter Wins EWL Title; Guenot Takes ThirdHUNTINGTON, WV —Bloomsburg University senior George Carter won the second Eastern Wrestling League title in his career with an 11-5 win over Matt Lebe of West Virginia Sunday night. Carter, who won at 157 pounds this season, was a 149-pound champ in 1999-00. As a team, the Huskies finished eighth with 44 points. Carter scored two takedowns and a two-point near fall to go up 6-1 at the end of one period. After choosing top to start the second period, Lebe escaped for the only period of the period and leaving Carter two minutes from the title. In the third period, Carter got two takedowns and an escape and posted the 11-5 victory. Carter will now make his fourth trip to the NCAA championships where he hopes to put All-American next to his name, the only title missing on brilliant resume. In other action, 174-pounder Hunter Guenot took third place with a 4-1 win over Nate Yetzer of Edinboro.Earlier on Sunday, Guenot lost a quarterfinal match to Carl Fronhofer of Pitt, 3-1, sending the senior to the consolation bracket. In consolations, Guneot won 10-2 over Steve Borja of Virginia Tech to advance to the third place match. With the third place finish, Guenot will make his third trip to the NCAA championships, March 21-23, in Kansas City, MO. At 125 pounds, Mike Collins lost his first round consolation match to Peter Destine of Clarion, 3-2, and was eliminated. At 133 pouds, Justin Haupt lost to Justin Owens of Lock Haven, 11-1, in a first round consolation bout and was eliminated. Mark Peirmattei, at 141-pounds, won by forfeit in his first round consolation match but then lost to Ron Tarquino of Pitt, 12-4. In the fifth place match, Piermattei lost to Frank Edger of Clarion, 19-6. At 149 pounds, Brad Forbes lost his first round consolation match, 4-2, to Jim Perry of Clarion and was eliminated. In the 165-pound weight class, Ryan Garner beat Chris Horning of Clarion, 5-3, in a first round consolation match, but then lost by fall in 2:19 to Jason Gilligan of Lock Haven. In a matchup for fifth place, Garner lost to Franscis Iorfido of Pitt, 8-5. At 184 pounds, Chad Hoare won by forfeit in his first round consolation match, then lost to Mike Greenberg of Lock Haven, 4-1. In the battle for fifth-place, Ryan Wilman beat Hoare, 11-3. At 197 pounds, Ryan Chulada lost to Adrian Thompson of West Virginia in a first round consolation match, 12-4, and was eliminated. At heavyweight, Tony Milone suffered an injury on day one of the tournament and was forced to forfeit his first consolation match on Sunday. |
