Bloomsburg Defeats Virginia Tech in Eastern Wrestling League Matchup

BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University wrestling team defeated Virginia Tech, 25-14, Saturday afternoon at Nelson Fieldhouse. The win the put the Huskies at 5-3, 2-2 in the Eastern Wrestling League.

The match started at 174 with a Virginia Tech forfeit to give the Huskies a 6-0 lead.

At 184, the Huskies' Chad Hoare and the Hokies' Steve Borja went head to head for three periods before Hoare defeated Borja, 8-5. The wrestlers were tied 4-4 into the third period until Hoare recorded a reversal for the Huskies to gain the lead. After Borja escaped, putting the match at 6-5, Hoare sealed the win with a takedown with 37 seconds remaining.

In the 197-pound match, the Hokies' Scott Justus (#16), the reigning EWL champion at 197, posted a 15-6 major decision over the Huskies' Andy Ludlow. Justus controlled the action getting six takedowns during the match.

Tony Milone answered for the Huskies at heavyweight, posting a 6-1 victory over Kris Wiedegreen. Milone took the lead with a takedown with 20 seconds left in the first period. Then in the third period, Milone added to his lead with an escape and a reversal with 50 seconds to go to seal the win.

In the 125-pound match, Bloomsburg's Brock Hite won by fall against Geoff Head. After a scoreless first period and one point for an escape by Hite in the second, Hite recorded a reversal against Head and pinned him at the 6:21 mark.

In the next match the Huskies' Justin Haupt and the Hokies' Dalton Head battled through three scoreless periods at 133. Haupt turned the match in his favor late in the third and earned the win based on riding time, increasing the Huskies' lead to 21-4.

At 141 pounds, the Hokies' Jim Miller posted a 16-8 victory over Bloomsburg's Mark Piermattei. Trailing 2-0, Miller answered with a reversal and took control of the match late in the first. Later, going into the third period with a 10-4 lead, Miller recorded two reversals and two escapes to post the major decision over Pierametti and bringing the Hokies' within reach of Bloomsburg.

At 149 pounds, the Hokies' Reed Carpenter battled the Huskies' Brad Forbes, edging him 5-4 in the third period of the match. Carpenter scored the first points with a takedown in the first but Forbes kept the match close. Going into the third period 3-3, Carpenter got a takedown with 32 seconds remaining. Forbes answered with an escape in the last few seconds but it was not enough for the victory.

At 157 pounds, Bloomsburg's George Carter (#14) came out strong against Chris Stith of Virginia Tech. Carter recorded the first takedown 1:30 into the first period and kept control of throughout the match. With 10 seconds left in the final period, Carter recorded a takedown to get a major decision, 16-7.

The final bout of the afternoon saw Virginia Tech's Mike Cox defeat Ryan Garner, 6-3. Cox got a takedown and an escape in the third period to seal the win.

Next weekend, the Huskies will participate in the PSAC Playoffs at Millersville.
