Guenot Takes First at Beast of the East Tournament

NEWARK, DE—Bloomsburg University's Hunter Guenot took home first place in the 174 pound weight class at the Beast of the East Collegiate Invitational on Friday in Newark, DE. As a team, the Huskies finished fifth with 83 points. Rider University won the event with 145 points.

Along with Guenot finishing first, George Carter and Chad Hoare were second at 157 and 184 pounds respectively, while Ryan Garner was fourth at 165 pounds. In addition, Brock Hite at 125 pounds and Justin Haupt at 133 pounds were both sixth.

Guenot, the top-seed in the weight, won by technical fall over Colin McGee of Delaware State in his first match of the day. He then won by fall over Jeff McAvenue of Binghamton in 3:17. In the semi-finals he was a 4-0 winner over Ed Willis of Ohio University before winning the title with a 4-3 win over second seed Gary Cooper of Buffalo. Guenot's win is the second straight tournament victory for the senior. He won the Penn State Open two weeks ago and improved to 18-2 for the year.

Carter was second for the second straight time after losing in the finals to top-seed Derek Jenkins of Rider, 12-11. Carter recorded a pin and two major decisions on his way to the finals.

Hoare, the third-seed, won three matches before falling in the finals to top-seed Garrett Bontempo of Buffalo, 6-2 in the finals.

Garner won his first two matches by major decision before losing in the semi-finals 4-3 to Luke Moore of Ohio University. In the consolation bracket Garner recorded an 8-2 win to advance to the third-place match where he lost 5-0 to Will Durkee of Virginia.

Brock Hite and Justin Haupt each took sixth in the tournament for the Huskies.

Bloomsburg is idle till Jan. 11th, 2003 when it hosts West Virginia at the Nelson Field House.
