Bloomsburg Wrestlers Compete in Penn State Open
BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University wrestling team competed at the Penn State Open Sunday. Senior Hunter Guenot (Karthaus/Bald Eagle Area) went 6-0 in the tournament to earn a first-place finish at the 174-pound weight class.
In his first match, Guenot pinned Zack Kellar, an unattached wrestler, in 1:51. He then went on to beat another unattached wrestler, Mike Maceroli, in a 6-1 decision. In his third match, Guenot defeated Sven Hafemeister of Columbia 18-2, by technical fall, in 5:48. He then won a close 3-1 decision over Mike Barikian of Navy before winning a major decision, 10-0 over Nick Carrier of Columbia. In the final match, Guenot defeated Mark Fee of Appalachian State, 3-2.
Senior George Carter (Greensburg/Greensburg Salem) wrestled his way to a second-place finish in the tournament at the 157-pound weight class. He defeated unattached wrestler Alex Montes 19-3, by technical fall, in 4:09. He then won two major decisions over Ricky Turk of Columbia, 17-5, and Josh Fultz of James Madison, 14-6. In his next match Carter defeated Robert Belville of Sacred Heart 7-5. Then in the semifinals he beat Brett Harman of Navy 5-2, before falling in the final to Mike Patrovich of Hofstra in a close 9-8 decision. Carter improved his career record to 102-22, putting him seventh on Bloomsburg's all-time win list.
Brad Forbes (Downingtown/Downingtown) went 4-2 in the tournament earning a sixth-place finish at the 141-pound weight class. He defeated Justin Lijo, an unattached wrestler, Jason Jones of Appalachian State, Paul Theodore of Cleveland State, and Derek Sola of Millersville. He fell to Doug McGraw of University of Pennsylvania and John-Henry Zarzycki of University of Massachusetts.
Several other Bloomsburg wrestlers competed in the tournament. Justin Haupt (Nazareth/Northampton), Jacob Warner (Pine Grove/Pine Grove), Ryan Garner (Dover/Upper Perkiomen), Chad Hoare (Reynoldsville/Dubois), Lewis Polley (Jacksonville, NC/Jacksonville), Tony Milone (Newtown/Council Rock), and Justin Thomas (Hunlock/Benton) all won matches.
The Huskies will be in action again at the Beast of the East Tournament in Wilmington, DE on December 20th.
