Lock Haven Defeats Bloomsburg in Eastern Wrestling League Matchup

BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University wrestling team fell to Lock Haven University, 29-12, Friday evening at Nelson Field House. The win put the Bald Eagles at 11-10, 2-4 in the Eastern Wrestling League. With the loss, the Huskies dropped to 7-7, 2-5 in the Eastern Wrestling League.

At 149, Lock Haven's James LaValle had two early takedowns to take a 4-1 lead into the second period. Brad Forbes would battle back to tie the score at 4-4 on the strength of two near fall points with one minute left in the bout. LaValle had another takedown with 0:30 left, but Forbes escaped with ten seconds on the clock. One point for riding time made the final score 7-5, giving the Bald Eagles a 3-0 lead.

In the second match, Bloomsburg's George Carter took control of the match from the start. Carter held a 9-2 lead over Matt Marquart at the end of the first period. He got the pin twenty seconds into the second period to give the Huskies a 6-3 lead in the match.

Jason Gilligan would tie the match up with a decision over Ryan Garner at 165. Gilligan won the 6-3 decision on the strength of two takedowns, an escape, and a point for riding time.

At 174, Hunter Guenot took an early lead on a takedown and two back points. An illegal hold by Chris Haines made the score 5-0 after the first period. Guenot scored on an escape in the second period to take a 6-0 lead. A late takedown by Haines made the final score 6-2, giving Bloomsburg a 9-6 advantage.

Chad Hoare would extend the Huskies' lead to 12-6 with a 9-6 decision over Mike Greenberg. Hoare held a 7-3 lead going into the third period, but Greenberg would get a point early for an escape then two points on a takedown to make the score 7-6. Hoare would seal the victory with a reversal with 0:35 left in the bout.

At 197, the Bald Eagles' Morgan Horner took immediate control of the match with a takedown seconds into the first period. He pinned Bloomsburg's Andy Ludlow in just 0:56 to tie the match at 12-12.

In the heavyweight bout, Tony Milone and Steve Itterly wrestled to a 3-3 tie after three periods, each scoring on takedown and an escape. Itterly scored on a takedown in the extra period to win the 5-3 decision putting the Bald Eagles ahead 15-12.

In the 125-pound match, Bloomsburg's Mike Collins took an early 2-0 lead on a takedown, but Lock Haven's Jim Collins would control the rest of the match not allowing Mike Collins another point, coming away with an 11-2 victory.

Lock Haven's Justin Owens won a major decision at 133 to seal the Bald Eagles' victory. Owens took an early 5-0 lead on a takedown and three near fall points. He controlled the rest of the match getting the 10-2 victory.

In the final bout of the evening, Mike Maney of Lock Haven pinned Mark Piermattei in 2:14, making the final score 29-12.

Bloomsburg will be in action again February 21st at East Stroudsburg at 7:30 p.m.
