Huskies Send Nine to Day Two of EWL Championships
BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg wrestling team advanced nine wrestlers to day two of the 2004 Eastern Wrestling League Championships. The Huskies are in fourth place with 50.5 points.
Advancing for coach Dan Wirnsberger were Brian Sellers (125), Bryan Hart (133), Scott Heckman, Brad Forbes (149), Josh Loew (157), Jim Bertulis (174), Nate Shirk (184), Chad Hoare (197) and Ryan Chulada (HWT).
Sellers opened the day with a 3-2 win over Jim Collins of Lock Haven before losing 3-2 in the semifinals to drop to tomorrow's consolation semi-finals.
Hart won his opener, 8-0, before losing 6-4 in the semi-finals to Jacob Gray of Edinboro. Hart will also wrestle in Sunday's consolation semi-finals.
Heckman dropped his opener 17-3, but came back with a pin in 2:41 over Aaron Brown of Virginia Tech in the consolation quarters. Heckman was trailing when he turned a defensive position into the fall.
Forbes lost his first match of the tournament 4-1 before coming back with a hard-fought 2-1, TB win over Matt DePolo of Cleveland State.
Loew lost by fall in his first bout, then beat Eric King of Edinboro 4-3 in the consolation round.
Ryan Garner, at 165, was the lone Bloomsburg wrestler to be eliminated. Garner lost by scores of 12-7 and 13-4.
At 174, Jim Bertulis lost 12-7 to top seed Nate Yetzer of Edinboro, then came back with a 12-3 win in the consolation quarters.
Shirk won his opening round bout 7-2 over Mike Croyle of Pitt, then lost to Alex Clemsen of Edinboro, 12-4, in the semi-finals.
Hoare lost 4-1 in his first match of the day, then pinned Carlos Ponce of Lock Haven in 2:22 to stay alive in the tournament.
Chulada pulled one of the big surprises in the heavyweight bracket when he, an undersized heavyweight, pinned Lanfer Simpson of West Virginia in the opening round in a time of 2:28. Hoare then dropped his semi-final bout, 10-2.
Action resumes Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Nelson Field House with the consolation semi-finals. The championship finals start at 2 p.m.
