Five to be Inducted into EWL Hall of Fame at Bloomsburg
BLOOMSBURG—Bloomsburg University will be the host of the 2004 Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) Championships on March 6th and 7th 2004. On the second day of the championships, the EWL will induct five former Huskies into its Hall of Fame. The five inductees are all associated with Bloomsburg wrestling as either athletes or as a coach. The five are Tony Caravella, '80, Pete Rinella, '95, and Brad Rozanski, Dave Morgan,'89 and former head coach Roger Sanders
Caravella was an outstanding wrestler at Bloomsburg University posting a career record of 112-28-2, 6th on the all-time list. He won an EWL title during his senior year after finishing second the two previous years. He was a three-time PSAC champion and a three-time qualifier for the NCAA championships. As a senior in 1979-80, he earned All-American status and also placed seventh at the NCAA championships. He also won the Wilkes Open and University of Delaware Invitational during his career.
Rinella posted a record of 76-33-1 during his career at Bloomsburg and was a three-time EWL place winner. As a senior in 1995, Rinella won an EWL championship at 118 pounds and was named the tournament's “Outstanding Wrestler.” At the PSAC championships he was a three-time place-winner and in 1995 won the 118 pound title and was named that tournament's “Outstanding Wrestler”.
On the national stage, Rinella was a three-time NCAA Division I Championship qualifier, capturing All-American status as a junior in 1994. During his sophomore campaign he also placed second at the prestigious Midlands Open Tournament. He was a member of the All-American under classmen team that represented the US at the Grand Prix in Wiesental, Germany.
Rozanski finished his career at Bloomsburg with a mark of 76-25-1. A two-time EWL Champion and three-time place-winner, Rozanski won EWL titles in both 1993 and 1995 at 126 pounds. As a freshman he placed fourth at 134 pounds during the EWL championships and earned a trip to the NCAA championships. At NCAA's, he earned All-American status with an eighth-place finish. Rozanski was also a two-time place-winner at the PSAC championships in his career and won the 126 pound title in 1995. He was also captured three Bloomsburg University Invitational titles and the Sheridan Championship during his career.
Morgan was a standout on the wrestling mat for the Huskies, tying the school record of 127 career victory wins. His record of 127-27-6 puts him 4th on the all-time list. Morgan was a four-time NCAA qualifier, and also a two-time EWL and PSAC champion. Morgan was also a two-time All-American for the Huskies. In 2001, Morgan was inducted into the Bloomsburg University Hall of Fame. After graduating from Bloomsburg, Morgan coached for four years at East Stroudsburg University, where he help coach the team to a school record of 16 dual meet wins in 1993-94 as well as six NCAA qualifiers. Morgan moved to Malvern Prep School in 1994 to become an instructor in health and physical education along with being the head wrestling coach. He has guided the team to a record of 84-40 and also has most recently achieved the first league championship in history. In 2000, Morgan was honored with induction into the PIAA Southeast Regional Hall of Fame.
The head coach of the Huskies for 21 years, Roger Sanders guided his teams to a record of 250-104-8. Overall, his coaching record stands at 300-122-8 after posting a record of 50-18 at New York University.
During his career as head coach at Bloomsburg, Sanders led the Huskies to two EWL championships (1981 and 1993), eight PSAC championships, and a fifth place finish at the Division I championships (1987). Individually, Sanders' wrestlers have claimed 47 PSAC titles, 27 EWL crowns, six Division II All-American honors and nine NCAA Division I All-American accolades. A professor at Bloomsburg University, Sanders was the president of the National Wrestling Coaches Association from 1987-91. He also served as wrestling coordinator for the United State Association of Blind Athletes and technical chairman for the International Blind Sports Association. A graduate of West Chester University Sanders claimed the College Division National Championship in 1964 while serving as team captain. He was a three-time Middle Atlantic Conference 157-pound Champion (1962-64) and was unbeaten in all dual meets from 1960-64. He has been awarded the Lifetime of Service Award by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and is a member of the West Chester University Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1995 and selected as the West Chester University Distinguished Alumnus in 1996. In 2003 he was also inducted into the Pennsbury High School Hall of Fame.
