Bloomsburg Tops Clarion In EWL Match

BLOOMSBURG-The Bloomsburg University wrestling team defeated Clarion in an Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) match, 23-12. The Huskies trailed 3-0 after the first bout, but with wins from Bryan Hart and Scott Heckman at 133 and 141, Bloomsburg took over the lead and never trailed the rest of the match. Bloomsburg improves to 3-6, 1-2 EWL and will look for their second EWL win when they travel to Virginia Tech on Sunday. The match began at the 125 weight class.

125-Clarion's Peter Derstine got a takedown with five seconds left to get a 3-1 win over the Huskies' Brian Sellers. Derstine scored on an escape in the second period, before Sellers leveled the match with an escape early in the third period.

133-Bryan Hart recorded three takedowns and two escapes in an 11-6 win over the Golden Eagles' Doug Surra. After choosing the defensive position going into the third period, he scored five points on a reversal, takedown and an escape to put the Huskies level with the Eagles, 3-3.

141-Bloomsburg's Scott Heckman defeated Clarion's Frank Edgar in a 16-11 decision. Heckman recorded five takedowns in the match, along with three escapes and two back points. Tied 8-8 going into the final period, Heckman scored from the defensive position to take a one-point lead and then tallied three takedowns in the final period to put the Huskies ahead of the Golden Eagles, 6-3.

149-After a scoreless first period, Bloomsburg's Brad Forbes took control in the second period scoring five back points in an eventual, 11-0 major decision. Choosing the defensive position to start the third period, Forbes got a quick escape and takedown. Forbes was rewarded a point at the end of the match for riding time.

157-Going into the third period tied 2-2, Clarion's Chris Horning scored three points on an escape and a takedown to take the match for the Golden Eagles. Horning's win cut the Huskies lead to 10-6.

165-The Huskies' Ryan Garner chose the defensive position going into the third period tied 7-7 with Clarion's Jeremy Reitz. Garner picked up an escape and a quick takedown to take a 10-7 lead. After a Reitz escape, Garner picked up another takedown to go up 12-8. Garner got his final point when Reitz earned his second stalling call of the match.

174-Bloomsburg's Justin Johnson increased the Huskies' lead to 16-6 with a 4-3 win over Clarion's Aaron Wright. Tied 2-2 going into the final period, Johnson chose the defensive position and took a 4-2 lead with a reversal. Wright recorded an escape but Johnson held on for the Bloomsburg win.

184-Leading 4-3 going into the third period, Bloomsburg's Nate Shirk got an early escape to build on his lead, eventually taking the match, 7-4. Shirk recorded three takedowns and an escape in the win for the Huskies.

197-Bloomsburg's Chad Hoare took a control of the match early, earning a 4-1 lead in the first period in an eventual 10-2 win. Hoare scored five points in the second period on an escape and two takedowns, building a 9-2 lead at the end of regulation. Hoare earned his final point on riding time.

HWT-Clarion's Matt Wilcox, tied 5-5 with the Huskies' Ryan Chulada, got a takedown in the third period and eventually pinned Chulada at the 3:27 mark. Wilcox recorded two takedowns and a reversal in the match.
