Bloomsburg Drops Cleveland State in Wrestling, 23-17

BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University wrestling team earned a hard fought 23-17 victory over Eastern Wrestling League opponent Cleveland State on Sunday at the Nelson Field House. The win improves Bloomsburg to 7-7, 3-3 EWL while Cleveland State falls to 7-7, 1-4 EWL.

Brian Sellers got the Huskies off to a quick start at 125 pounds with a fall over DeAngelo Penn at 6:32. Sellers led the match 5-4 at the time of the fall.

In the 133 bout, Bloomsburg's Bryan Hart jumped out to a 4-1 lead over Tom O'Brien with two takedowns in the first period. Hart added to his lead with a reversal and a stalling point, leaving the match at 7-1. Hart finished the match with two takedowns to earn a major decision, 13-2. After the match, Cleveland State's bench was deducted a point for unsportsmanlike conduct.

In the 141-pound bout, Cleveland State's Anthony Coleman started the match with a takedown to take an early 2-0 lead. Bloomsburg's Scott Heckman later escaped, making the match 2-1. In the second period Coleman scored another takedown to lead 4-1. Coleman scored one final takedown and a bonus point for riding time to win the match 7-2.

Bloomsburg's Brad Forbes scored a takedown and three near fall points to lead 5-0 after the first period in the 149 match versus Matt DePolo. Forbes earned two second period points on an escape and a stalling warning to lead 7-0. He then scored a takedown at the buzzer to earn a major decision, 9-0.

At 157, Cleveland State's Jason Effner scored an early takedown to lead Josh Loew, 2-0 after the first. Effner was later awarded a point on an illegal hold by Loew. Effner added a point for riding time and won the bout, 4-0 making the team score 14-5 in favor of Bloomsburg.

In the afternoon's most exciting match at 165 pounds, Bloomsburg's Ryan Garner started the scoring with a takedown, but Cleveland State's Matt Klinger scored a reversal to nod the score 2-2 at the end of two. Garner got an escape and Klinger received a point for riding time to send the match into overtime. Garner got a takedown in overtime to earn the victory, 5-3.

At 174, Matt Kallai of Cleveland State earned a victory over Bloomsburg's Jim Bertulis with a reversal and two nearfall points with 24 seconds remaining in the match. Bertulis escaped but could not take Kallai down and lost the match, 4-1.

In the 184 match, Ryan Chulada excited the crowd with a second period pin. Leading 7-2, Chulada rolled the Viking's Ron Howard on his back and was awarded the pin, sealing the victory for the Huskies at 23-8.

At 197, the Huskies Chad Hoare started the scoring in the second period with an escape. After Cleveland State's Joe Phillips to Hoare down, he later escaped tying the match at 2-2. Phillips used a third period escape and takedown to lead 5-2. Hoare escaped to make the match 5-3 but could not take Phillips down.

In the heavyweight bout, Russ Davie of Cleveland State took down Bloomsburg's Aaron Ferrance and pinned him in 41 seconds.

Bloomsburg will return to action February 20th as they host East Stroudsburg in their final home match of

the season.
