BALD EAGLE WRESTLING CLAIMS 20-16 VICTORY OVER BLOOMSBURG

(Lock Haven, Pa.) - Wrestling in their final matches in Thomas Fieldhouse, all six Bald Eagle seniors wrestling came away with hard-fought victories, including the decisive win by Steve Itterly (Easton/Nazareth) at heavyweight, to give Lock Haven University (4-10, 1-6 EWL) the 20-16 victory over Bloomsburg University (8-8, 3-4 EWL) this evening in Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) action. It was the 14th straight win for the Bald Eagles over the Huskies, and gave them their only league victory of the season.

Starting at 125 pounds, Bloomsburg took the early 3-0 lead as Brian Sellers put a 7-3 decision over sophomore Jim Collins (Jonestown/Northern Lebanon) in the books.

Senior Dave Predko (Ridgway/Ridgway) evened the score, jumping out to a 4-0 lead over Bryan Hart in the 133 pound match-up. Predko added a reversal and a riding time point after three periods, claiming the 7-1 win to tie things up at 3-3.

At 141 pounds, Bloomsburg picked up a bonus point as Scott Heckman controlled true freshman Casey Moore (Beech Creek/Central Mountain) throughout for the 15-1 major decision.

Senior and No. 15-ranked Mike Maney (Clarence/Bald Eagle Area) was a 4-0 winner over Brad Forbes. Maney posted a takedown early in the first period and kept Forbes down to pick up riding time. An escape in the second for Maney gave him a 3-0 lead, and after a neutral start and no scoring in the third period, he recorded the 4-0 victory to close in on Bloomsburg, 7-6.

At 157 pounds, a commanding 14-5 major decision by senior Charlie Brenneman (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) over Josh Loew bounced the Haven into the lead, 10-7. After entering the third period ahead, 5-1, Brenneman scored four takedowns along with the riding time point for the major decision.

Senior Jason Gilligan (Brookville/Brookville) jumped out to a 6-2, first period lead before scoring the 13-5 major decision against Ryan Garner to boost the Haven lead to 14-7. Moving into the third period with a 10-4 advantage, Gilligan scored another takedown with just under a minute remaining and held strong to tack on a riding time point for the extra team point.

Bloomsburg answered with six points, however, as Jim Bertulis pinned Ryan Summers (Plainwell, Mich./Plainwell) in 1:48 after getting the early takedown at 174 pounds. The points for the fall put the Haven lead at just 14-13.

At 184 pounds, senior Mike Greenberg (Canton/Canton) shutout Nate Shirk for the 3-0 decision. Greenberg scored an escape in the second period and came up with a takedown with just six seconds remaining for the win.

The Huskies moved back to within one point with a 1-0 win by Chad Hoare over Bald Eagle Carlos Ponce (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah Miami Lakes). The match's only point came in the second period, Hoare tallying the escape point after starting in the defensive position.

With just one bout remaining and the team score at 17-16 in favor of Lock Haven, the winner at heavyweight would decide the team outcome. Bloomsburg's Ryan Chulada rolled out a quick takedown over Lock Haven senior Steve Itterly just 16 seconds into the match, but Itterly would break free quickly. Chulada scored another takedown with 37 seconds remaining in the first period, but again, Itterly posted the prompt escape. Another escape by Itterly in the second period made the score 4-3 in favor of the Huskie wrestler. Chulada opted for the neutral start in the third stanza, and after a minute passed with no scoring, Itterly finally worked through for the control position on the mat for a takedown with 45 seconds remaining. The Bald Eagle senior was able to hold Chulada down the rest of the period, taking the 5-4 win and securing the 20-16 emotional victory for the Haven.
