Hoare leads Huskies to a Third-Place Finish at the PSAC Championships

EDINBORO, PA— The Bloomsburg University wrestling team finished third at the 2004 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships. Edinboro won its third straight championship with 140.5 points, Lock Haven took second with 118 points, while the Huskies finished the weekend with 91 points.
Bloomsburg was led by Chad Hoare's (Reynoldsville/DuBois) first-place finish at the 197 pound weight class. On Friday, Hoare got a win over Carlos Ponce of Lock Haven, sending him to the semifinals of the tournament. He then moved to the finals after an 8-2 win over fourth-seed, Charles Deighton, of East Stroudsburg. In the final match, Hoare defeated Mike LaBella, 3-2, to win the championship.
Freshman Bryan Hart (Easton/Easton) took third place, defeating Dan Gonzalez of East Stroudsburg, 4-1, in the 133 pound weight class. Earlier in the day, Hart fell to Dave Predko of Lock Haven in the championship semifinals, 5-1. He then won by default to advance to the third place match.
Brad Forbes (Downingtown/Downingtown), who was the runner-up in the 149 weight class last year, placed third this year with a 9-1 win over Zack Leathers of Shippensburg. In the consolation semifinals, Forbes picked up a 7-4 win over Slippery Rock's Ben Young.
At 141, Mark Piermattei (Middleburg/Middleburg) placed fourth falling to Ron Deoppelheuer of Edinboro, 14-2. After losing in the semifinals to Millersville's Derek Sola, 4-0, Piermattei got a 10-2 win over Tyler Rapp of East Stroudsburg to advance to the third place match.
Josh Loew (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) turned in a fifth-place finish at 157 for Bloomsburg, with a 8-0 win over Kutztown's Jamie Gill. Earlier Loew lost 8-5 to Charles Brenneman of Lock Haven in the consolation semifinals, then picked up a 10-1 win over Keith Kleckner of East Stroudsburg.
Bloomsburg got another fifth-place finish from Jim Bertulis (Aston/Garnett Valley) in the 174 weight class. In the consolation bracket, Bertulis started the day with a pin over Kenny Williams of Shippensburg at the 1:38 mark to advance to the semifinals. Falling 7-4 to Curtis Yeager of Millersville in the semifinals, Bertulis bounced back for a 10-3 win over John Carr of East Stroudsburg in the fifth-place match.
At the 125 weight class, Brian Sellers (Pennsbury/Pennsbury) finished sixth for the Huskies. After losing to Slippery Rock's Ben Watson in the consolation semifinals, Sellers moved to the fifth/sixth-place match where he dropped a 3-0 decision to Jamie Thomas of Shippensburg, 3-0.
Nate Shirk (Paxtonville/Middleburg) took fifth-place at the 184 pound weight class after falling to East Stroudsburg's Brandon Mihalko, 6-1, in the first round of the championship bracket. In the consolation bracket, he defeated Jeremiah Frederick of Slippery Rock, 8-2, in his first match. In the semifinals, Shirk lost, 9-0, to third-seed Mike Greenberg of Lock Haven, placing him in the fifth place match against Millersville's Mark Knock. In the finals, Shirk won, taking fifth, in a 5-1 decision over Knock.
Aaron Ferrance (Northern Cambria/Bishop Carroll) placed sixth in a close overtime match against Mike Davidowich of Millersville. Entering the overtime tied, 4-4, Ferrance and Davidowich each got an escape, sending them into a sudden death period. Davidowich got a takedown 18 seconds in to win the match. Earlier in the day, Ferrance defeated Dave Kocevar of Shippensburg, 6-4, before falling in the consolation semifinals to East Stroudsburg's Stanley Foster, in a 3-1 decision.
Bloomsburg is 6-6 and is 2-2 in the Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) and will be back in action next weekend at Edinboro home to Cleveland State.
