Pitt Downs Bloomsburg in Wrestling Action

BLOOMSBURG— The Pitt Panthers won the first nine bouts of the evening and rolled to a 41-3 win over Bloomsburg University in an Eastern Wrestling League matchup Thursdsay night.

The match started at 141 pounds with Pitt's Ronald Tarquino dominating the Huskies' Scott Heckman, Tarquino picked up two takedowns and had four near falls to win easily by a score of 14-1.

At 149 pounds, Pitt's Matt Kocher picked up a 3-0 win over the Huskies' Tyler Williams. After no scoring the first two periods, Kocher got one point by escape, one for Bloomsburg stalling and one on riding time for the win.

In the 157 pound bout, Pitt's Justin Nestor jumped out to a 6-2 first period lead helped by three-point near fall. Nestor continued to control the match with a takedown and another three-point near fall in the second period to go up 12-2. Nestor eventually won by a 15-2 score to put the Panthers up 11-0.

At 165, Zach Doll won by default over Ryan Garner. Doll led 8-3 near the end of the first period when Garner went down with the injury

In the 174 match, Francis Iorfido led 6-2 after the first period. Bloomsburg's Jim Bertulis took an injury timeout at the end of the first period, and Iorfido pinned just 48 seconds into the second period.

At 184, Mike Croyle needed an overtime period to defeat the Huskies' Nate Shirk. Going into the overtime tied 1-1, Croyle got a takedown and won the match 3-1.

At 197, Josh Birt got an early takedown to take a 2-1 lead in to the second period. After a stalling call on Hoare, Birk scored an escape and then another takedown to take control of the match 5-1 and then rode Hoare out the entire third period to earn the 6-1 victory.

In the heavyweight match Travis Shirley took down Bloomsburg's Aaron Ferrance and then pinned him just 2:22 in to the match.

At 125, Pitt's Drew Headlee took control in the beginning of the third period and went on to pin Brian Sellers in 6:46.

In the 133 match, Bryan Hart and Adam Curry swapped escapes in the second and third periods, respectively and ended regulation tied at 1-1. Hart then got a takedown in overtime to earn the Huskies lone win of the night.
