Bloomsburg Wrestles at Buckeye Duals

COLUMBUS, OH--The Bloomsburg University wrestling team got back into action Saturday at the Buckeye Duals held at Ohio State University. The Huskies beat Eastern Illinois, 24-12, before losing to Indiana, 23-15 and Ohio State, 25-13. Bloomsburg is now 2-4 on the season. The Huskies host Cornell University Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the Nelson Field House.

BLOOMSBURG VS. EASTERN ILLINOIS

Bloomsburg defeated Eastern Illinois in their first match at the 2004 Ohio State Buckeye Duals. Trailing 12-9 following the heavyweight match, Bloomsburg rallied, winning the final four matches against the Panthers.

125- After recording a takedown in the first period, the Huskies Brian Sellers pinned Eastern Illinois' Kevin McNicholas 2:23 into the match. The pin is Sellers' second on the season.

133-The Huskies' Justin Haupt increased the Bloomsburg lead to 18-12 with a 8-2 win over the Panthers' Pat Dowty. After being taken down in the first period, Haupt pulled a reversal, tying the score at 2-2. In the second period, after Dowty chose the defensive position, Haupt earned three back points and led the rest of the match.

141-Bloomsburg's Scott Heckman defeated Eastern Illinois' Bob Fangerow 7-3 at 141 for the Huskies. Heckman got off to a quick start, recording two takedowns in the first period. He also had one takedown in the second period and earned a point on riding.

149-The Huskies' Brad Forbes concluded the Bloomsburg matchup against Eastern Illinois with a 9-4 win over Chris Jordan. Forbes scored six points on back points, and also recorded a takedown in the first period.

157- Eastern Illinois' Clay French went up 2-0 on the Huskies' Chris Tate after a reversal early in second period. Tate rallied with escape, but was then taken down nearing the close of the second period. Though earning an escape, Tate was unable to get a takedown and feel to French, 4-3.

165- Matt Veach of Eastern Illinois recorded a takedown and a reversal in a 5-2 win over the Huskies' Ryan Garner. Garner rallied, recording two escapes in the match, but was unable to get a takedown over Veach, who also earned a riding point in the match.

174-Bloomsburg's Justin Johnson got the Huskies on the board with a 5-3 win over the Panther's Kenny Robertson. Johnson recorded two takedowns in the match, and also earned an escape at the beginning of the second period after Robertson chose offensive position.

184-The Huskies earned six points as the Panther's Adam Sesso defaulted against Bloomsburg's Ryan Chulada.

197- Eastern Illinois' Jim Kassner defeated Bloomsburg's Chad Hoare, 3-1. After a scoreless first period, Hoare started off the second with an escape. Kassner then recorded a takedown to go up 2-1. In the final period, Kassner got his third point on an escape.

HWT-Peter Ziminski recorded four takedowns in a Panther win over Bloomsburg's Aaron Ferrance.

BLOOMSBURG VS. INDIANA

The Bloomsburg University wrestling team fell to the Indiana Hoosiers, 23-15 in their second match at the Ohio State Duals. Bloomsburg tied the team score at 3-3 after a win at 165 by Ryan Gardner, but the Huskies saw the Hoosiers pull away as Indiana won three consecutive matches to go up 15-3.

125- Indiana increased their lead to 19-6 when Joe Dubuque won a major decision over the Huskies' Brian Sellers. Leading 2-1 after the first period, Dubuque scored six points in the second period, taking a permanent lead over Sellers.

133-The Huskies' Bryan Hart needed only 18 seconds to pin the Hoosiers' Pat Barth, making the team score 18-12, Indiana. The pin is Hart's first on the season.

141- Coyte Cooper took control immediately, leading 4-2 after the first period, ultimately taking the match, 15-6. Cooper recorded five takedowns in the match.

149-Bloomsburg's Brad Forbes defeated Jeff Ratliff in an exciting overtime win. After being tied at the end of regulation, 4-4, the first overtime period was scoreless. In each of the thirty second periods, both Ratliff and Forbes recorded escapes in each of their turns in the bottom position. In the next overtime period, with both competitors starting in the neutral positions, Ratliff and Forbes again went scoreless. Again, each athlete had 30 seconds in the bottom position, with both earning an escape. With the score tied 6-6, riding time was compiled, with Forbes coming out on top.

157- Indiana's Coyte Cooper put the Hoosiers on the board first with a 7-2 win over the Huskies' Chris Tate. Leading 2-1 after the first period, Cooper scored five points in the second period on an escape and two takedowns.

165- Bloomsburg's Ryan Garner won a 8-4 decision over Indiana's Tim Falls. Despite two backpoints against him in the beginning of the second period, Garner rallied, recording an escape and a takedown to take a 5-2 lead going into the final period. In the third period, Garner scored two points reversing a Falls takedown.

174-After finishing the first period tied, 4-4, Indiana's Brady Richardson took control in the second period, defeating Bloomsburg's Justin Johnson, 11-5.

184- Indiana's Andy Rios increased the Hoosier lead to 9-3 with an 11-7 win over Nate Shirk. Rios recorded two takedowns in the match, along with two reversals.

197- Pat DeGain got his second pin of the season over Chad Hoare at 197. With the pain at 2:49, DeGain increased the Indiana lead to 15-3.

HWT- In an exciting overtime match, Bloomsburg's Aaron Ferrance defeated Indiana's Joel Powers, 4-2. Ferrance recorded an escape in the second period, and went up 2-1 when both athletes were given a point for stalling. After electing the bottom position going into the third period, Powers earned an escape, tying the score at 2-2. In the overtime period, Ferrance got a takedown to win the match.

BLOOMSBURG VS OHIO STATE

The Bloomsburg University wrestling team fell to Ohio State in the final match of the 2004 Ohio State Buckeye Duals, 25-13. The Huskies jumped out to an early lead, but the 12th ranked team in the nation quickly regained the lead, winning the next five matches. The match began with the 157-pound weight class.

125-Bloomsburg's Brian Sellers jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first period en route to a 6-4 win over Jermaine Jones of Ohio State. Despite an escape and takedown from Jones in the third period, Sellers was able to hang on for the Bloomsburg win.

133-Bryan Hart rolled to his second victory of the day with a 7-3 win over Jesse Lang of Ohio State. Leading 4-3 after the first period, Hart chose the down position, recording an escape early in the second period. To seal the Bloomsburg win, Hart also recorded a takedown in the second period. Hart is now 12-4 on the season.

141- Bloomsburg's Scott Heckman defeated the Buckeyes' Jeff Dotson in an 11-0 major decision. After a scoreless first period, Heckman recorded a takedown and seven backpoints to take control of the match. In the third period he recorded a second takedown.

149-Jeff Ratliff got his 100th career victory at Ohio State in a 15-4 win over Bloomsburg's Mark Permattei. Leading 4-1 after the first period, Ratliff extended his lead with two more takedowns in the second period. Early in the third, Ratliff recorded a reversal to go up 10-2 en route to the win.

157- Bloomsburg's Josh Loew gave the Huskies an early 3-0 lead over the Buckeyes with a 4-3 win over James King. Going into the third period tied 3-3, Loew chose the bottom position, earning an escape to take the match for the Huskies.

165- Ohio State's John Clark took an early lead on the Huskies' Ryan Garner with a takedown early in the first period. After coming close to pinning, Clark earned 15 backpoints, resulting in a technical fall for the Buckeyes.

174-Alex Picazo increased the Buckeye lead to 8-3 with a 7-3 decision over Jim Bertulis of Bloomsburg. Despite a Bertulis escape in the third period, Picazo was able to record another takedown to seal the win for the Buckeyes.

184- Blake Kaplan got his second technical fall of the season against the Huskies Ryan Chulada. After an early takedown in the first period, Kaplan compiled 13 backpoints to put the Buckeyes up 13-3 in the match.

197- J.D. Bergman got his second win of the duals tournament against Bloomsburg's Chad Hoare. Leading 4-3 going into the final period, Bergman recorded an escape and a takedown to win the match for the Buckeyes with a final score of 7-4. With the loss, Hoare now has a record of 9-8 on the season.

HWT- Three-time national qualifier Tommy Rowlands continued his undefeated season winning a technical fall decision over the Huskies' Aaron Ferrance, 22-7. Rowlands recorded eight takedowns in the match, moving to 24-0 on the season.
