Bloomsburg Finishes Second at Beast of the East Tournament

NEWARK, DE —The Bloomsburg University wrestling team finished tied for second at the third annual Beast of the East College Wrestling tournament in Newark, DE.

The Huskies finished with 101 points to tie for second with the Tar Heels of North Carolina, while Northwestern took top honors with 162.5 points.

For the Huskies, Jim Bertulis (Aston/Garnett Valley) won the 165 pound weight class. Bertulis won four matches on the day, the first three by fall. In the finals, Bertulis beat Nick Hayes of Northwestern by a score of 9-2. In the semifinals, Bertulis pinned Steve Smith of Duke in 34 seconds.

The championship by Bertulis is the second title won by the junior this season coming on the heels of his win at the Penn State Open two weeks ago.

In the 133 pound weight class Tony Curto (Easton/Wilson) finished second losing to 14-6 in the finals to Evan Sola of North Carolina.

At 174 pounds, Bryce Hasseman (Franklin, IN/Franklin) took second in his weight losing in the finals by a 7-2 score to Jake Herbert of Northwestern. On his way to the finals, Hasseman picked up two of his wins by major decision.

At 197 pounds, the Huskies' Chad Hoare (Reynoldsville/DuBois) took second losing in the championship match 4-2 to Matt Delguyd of Northwestern, 4-2, in sudden death.

Finishing fourth at 157 pounds was Chris Tate (Boothwyn/Garnett Valley). Tate lost in the consolation finals by a 2-0 score to Scott Rendos of Buffalo.

The second place finish was the best for the Huskies in the event after finishing sixth a year ago.
