Bloomsburg Takes Fourth at Oklahoma Gold Classic

BROCKPORT, NY— The Bloomsburg University wrestling team finished fourth at the SUNY Brockport Oklahoma Gold Classic on Saturday. The Huskies finished with 84.5 points to 212.5 for the University of Oklahoma which won the event.

Leading the way for the Huskies was the trio of Jim Bertulis, Bryce Hasseman, and Chad Hoare, who each took second in their weight classes. Frank Beasley and Tony Curto also finished third in the tournament for the Huskies.

Bertulis took second for the Huskies in the 165-pound weight class. He picked up three wins in the tournament, including two by major-decision.

Hasseman wrestled tough for the Huskies, winning his first match at 174-pounds by technical fall in only 3:34. He won his second match by major decision and was a 4-3 winner in the semifinals. Hasseman fell in the finals to E.K. Waldhaus, the number nine-ranked wrestler in the nation in his weight class.

At 197-pounds, Chad Hoare put in one of the most solid tournament performances for the Huskies this season.

Hoare did not allow a point in his first two matches and wrestled Ohio State's J.D. Bergman, the number two-ranked wrestler in the country in the semifinals. Hoare was a 2-1 victor, winning the match based on overtime criteria. In the finals, Hoare wrestled tough but lost to Oklahoma's Joel Flaggert.

Frank Beasley wrestled hard at 165-pounds, winning by technical fall in his first match. After pinning his next opponent, Beasley fell to the eventual champion. In the consolation bracket, Beasley was an 11-4 winner over Penn's Lior Zamir. In the third place bout, Beasley came away with a hard fought 2-1 decision over Army's Chad Marzec.

At 133-pounds, Tony Curto lost his second round match to Oklahoma's Joe Comparin, 4-3 on criteria. In the consolation bracket, Curto reeled off three straight wins before facing Comparin in the third place bout. Curto got his revenge on Comparin, picking up the 10-2 major decision.

Bloomsburg will be back in action Nov. 17th at the University of Pittsburgh in an Eastern Wrestling League match up.
