Bloomsburg Downs Clarion in College Wrestling

CLARION —The 22nd-ranked Bloomsburg University wrestling team downed Clarion University, 25-15, in an Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) matchup Friday night.

Clarion opened the match with a victory at 133 pounds when Chris Lape decisioned Joe Hasseman (Franklin, IN/Franklin), 5-2. The Golden Eagles took a 6-0 lead after Frank Edgar downed Bloomsburg's Brad Forbes (Downingtown/Strath Haven) at 141 pounds, 10-3.

The Huskies trimmed the team score to 6-4 at 149 pounds when freshman George Hickman (Wilmington, NC/Riverside) picked up a major decision over Bart Wylie, 10-3. At 157 pounds, Clarion's Chris Horning pinned Mark Piermattei (Middleburg/Middleburg) in 1:27 to stretch the home team's lead to 12-4.

Bloomsburg pulled to within 12-7 at 165 pounds when Jim Bertulis (Aston/Garnett Valley) won by decision over Marcus Surin, 6-0. At 174 pounds, Bryce Hasseman (Franklin, IN/Franklin) won by forfeit to give Bloomsburg its first lead of the night, 13-12.

Clarion went back in front 15-13 at 184 pounds after Chris Goings 7-6 win over Jesse Hasseman (Franklin, IN/Franklin). Bloomsburg took the lead for good after Chad Hoare won a 6-0 decision over Charlie Cilinski, 6-0. The win put the Huskies in front 16-15.

In the heavyweight match, Mike Spaid (Perkiomenville/Boyertown) won by decision over John Fager of Clarion by a 2-0 score for a 19-15 Bloomsburg advantage. The Huskies closed out the evening with a forfeit win for Mike Sees (Northumberland/Northumberland) at 125 pounds giving them a 10-point victory, 25-15.

The win improves the Huskies season mark to 5-5, 1-2 in the EWL, while Clarion falls to 3-9, 0-3 in the EWL.
