Huskies Fall to Drexel in Wrestling

BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University wrestling team fell to the Drexel Dragons on Friday night, 22-15. Bryce Hasseman (Franklin, IN/Franklin), Chad Hoare (DuBois/DuBois), Mike Sees (Northumberland/ Northumberland) and Jim Bertulis (Aston/Garnett Valley) picked up wins for the Huskies, now 3-4 on the year. Bloomsburg took an early 7-6 lead before the Dragons took control, winning four of the last five bouts. The match began at the 174 weight class.
174- Bryce Hasseman got the Huskies off to a strong start with a 6-3 decision over Drexel's Nick Kozar. Hasseman took a 4-1 lead after the first period and after starting the second from the defensive position, got a reversal to go up 6-1. Despite two escapes from Kozar, Hasseman was able to stay ahead and get the win for Bloomsburg.
184- Drexel's Carl Schmidt got an early takedown en route to a pin over the Huskies' Jesse Hasseman (Franklin, IN/Franklin). Schmidt's pin 1:15 into the match put the Dragons up, 6-3.
197- Hoare got a major decision win for the Huskies at the 197 bout with a 10-2 win over the Dragons' Jon Oplinger. After a scoreless first period, Hoare scored three points in the second period on an escape and a takedown. In the third, Oplinger chose neutral and Hoare scored six points on three takedowns to get the win for the Huskies.
HWT-Chris Cowen scored on a takedown in the first period and never trailed en route to a 4-2 win over the Huskies' Mike Spaid (Boyertown/Boyertown). At the start of the third, Cowen got a reversal before a Spaid escape. Spaid earned his final point on a penalty against Cowen.
125-Sees jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the first period and won by technical fall, 24-7 over Drexel's Dan Stewart. In the second, Stewart chose defensive position and scored on an escape before Sees scored eight straight points. In the third, Sees scored six points before the match was called.
133-Drexel's Zack Makovsky took a 5-1 lead in the first on his way to a 9-5 win over the Huskies' Tony Curto (Easton/Wilson). In the second period, Curto cut the lead to two, scoring four points, but Makovsky came back with a reversal and scored two points off an escape and a stalling penalty against Curto to seal the win for Drexel.
141-The Dragons' Chris Renninger defeated Mark Piermattei (Middleburg/Middleburg), 6-3 to put the Dragons ahead of the Huskies, 15-12. Renninger led 2-1 after the first period before Piermattei took a 3-2 lead in the third. After Piermattei was called for locking hands, the score was tied at three apiece. Renninger earned an escape from the defensive position, taking a 4-3 lead and also scored on a takedown in the final minute of the match.
149-Despite an escape late in the third period, Ben Young (Downingtown/Downingtown) was unable to get a takedown, falling to Joe Anastasio, 6-5. Young led 4-3 after two periods before Anastasio got an escape from the defensive position early in the third. Anastasio scored on a takedown nearing the end of the match to seal the win for Drexel.
157- Ryan Hluschak of Drexel scored four points in the third period on his way to a 10-2 major decision win over the Huskies' Chris Tate (Boothwyn/Garnett Valley). In the first period, Hluschak got a quick takedown and three backpoints in the first period. Hluschak's win sealed the team victory for the Dragons.
165- Bertulis got a 5-1 win in the final bout of the night over Drexel's Billy Haydt. Bertulis jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first two periods before Hyadt scored on an escape from the defensive position in the third. Bertulis got his second takedown nearing the end of the match to get the win for the Huskies.
The Huskies will host West Virginia University in an Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) match-up at 6:30 p.m. Bloomsburg is 0-1 in the EWL.
