Bloomsburg Tops Lock Haven for First Time in 15 Years

BLOOMSBURG— The 22nd ranked Bloomsburg University wrestling team topped Lock Haven, 28-10 in an Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) match Friday night. The win was the first for Bloomsburg over Lock Haven since the 1989-90 season. The meet also marked the final home match for seniors Bryce Hasseman (Franklin/Franklin,IN), Chad Hoare (Reynoldsville/Dubois), and Mark Piermattei (Middleburg/Middleburg).

In the night's most exciting match, Mike Sees (Northumberland/Shikellamy) avenged his only loss of the season by pinning Obe Blanc at 125 pounds. Blanc started the match out quickly, taking Sees down and scoring two near fall points seconds into the match. Sees earned an escaped but was taken down again by Blanc. After another escape, Sees scored a takedown and gained control of Blanc, pinning him in 2:41 of the first period.

At 133 pounds, Tony Curto (Easton/Wilson) was a 15-4 winner over Lock Haven's Jim Collins. Curto led 5-2 after the first period, and used a seven point second period to lead 12-3 heading into the third. In the third, Curto scored another takedown and added a point for riding time to pick up the major decision.

Bloomsburg won their third straight match as Brad Forbes (Downingtown/Strath Haven) was a 7-3 winner over Matt Fittery at 141 pounds. Trailing 3-2 heading into the second period, Forbes scored an escape to tie the match at 3-3. In the third period, Fittery was on the defensive position as Forbes scored three near fall points after getting Fittery on his back. Forbes' decision put the Huskies up 13-0.

At 149 pounds, Josh Medina topped Bloomsburg's George Hickman (Wilmington, NC/Riverside) 21-9. Medina scored 10 takedowns in the match and added a point for riding time to pick up the major decision.

At 157 pounds, Chris Tate (Boothwyn/Garnett Valley) wrestled hard but fell 6-0 to Lock Haven's Seth Martin. Leading 1-0 heading into the final period, Martin scored on a takedown and was awarded two bonus points en route to the 6-0 decision.

Jim Bertulis (Aston/Garnett Valley) got the Huskies back on track at 165 pounds. After a scoreless first period, Bertulis scored on an escape and added a takedown with two near fall points to lead Lock Haven's B.J. Mikeska 5-0 heading into the third period. In the third, Bertulis scored a takedown and bonus points with :12 remaining to pick up the 10-1 major decision.

Bryce Hasseman picked up his 15th straight win as he dominated Lock Haven's Carlos Ponce, 17-2. Hasseman led 6-0 after the first and added five points in the second to take an 11-0 lead heading into the third period. In the third, Hasseman scored three straight takedowns to pick up the technical fall win in 6:28.

At 184 pounds, Mike Metzger picked up a 7-2 decision over Bloomsburg's Jesse Hasseman (Franklin, IN/Franklin). Leading 2-1 heading into the final period, Metzger scored an escape from the defensive position and added two, third period takedowns to pick up the 7-2 decision.

At 197 pounds, Chad Hoare picked up a thrilling 8-5 win over Lock Haven's Morgan Horner. Hoare led 2-1 after the first period, and scored an escape to start the second. Trailing 4-1, Horner scored a takedown but was quickly reversed by Hoare. Leading 5-3 heading into the third period, Hoare traded reversals with Horner and was awarded a point for locked hands by Horner to pick up the 8-5 win. Hoare's win at 197 pounds sealed the victory for the Huskies.

Mike Spaid (Perkiomenville/Boyertown) continued his winning ways as he topped Jamie Nagel, 9-2 at heavyweight. Nagel struck first with a quick takedown but Spaid would score the next nine points to pick up the win.

With the win, Bloomsburg improves to 9-5, 4-2 EWL while Lock Haven falls to 5-8, 2-3 EWL.

Bloomsburg returns to action tomorrow as they head to Cornell to take on the Big Red at 7:00 p.m.
