Bertulis Wins Penn State Open, Eight Other Huskies Place

STATE COLLEGE, PA—The Bloomsburg University wrestling team had a solid showing at the Penn State Invitational. In all, nine of the 21 wrestlers the Huskies sent to State College placed in the top eight of their weight class.

The Huskies' top performer of the day came was Jim Bertulis (Aston/Garnett Valley) who won five straight matches on his way to the 165 pound title. In the finals, Bertulis pinned Maryland's Jason Kiessling in :15 for the win. The tournament win was the first for Bertulis in his career.

Bloomsburg also had two wrestlers finish third at the tournament. Bryce Hasseman (Franklin, IN/Franklin) lost in the 174 pound semifinal before winning two straight consolation bouts to pick up third. Tony Curto (Easton/Wilson) won two matches before falling in the 133 pound quarterfinals. Curto then won four straight consolation matches to place third.

At 125 pounds, Brian Sellers (Yardley/Pennsbury) wrestled a solid tournament, winning four matches en route to a fourth place finish. Chad Hoare (Reynoldsville/DuBois) also placed fourth at 197 pounds. Hoare won two matches before losing 8-2 in the semifinals to the eventual tournament champion.

The Huskies also got solid showings from Frank Beasley (Odin, IL/Centralia) and Aric Furhman (Spring Grove/Delone Catholic) who both finished fifth in the tournament. Beasley won four matches at 165 pounds including a 2:44 pin in the fifth place consolation bout over Maryland's Rob Parker. Furhman, who will be red-shirting for the Huskies this season, dropped an 8-3 decision to the 157 pound champion in the quarterfinals before winning three consolation bouts.

Chipping in with eighth place finishes for Bloomsburg were Mike Anderson (Littlestown/Littlestown) and Nate Shirk (Middleburg/Middleburg). Anderson picked up three wins in the tournament for the Huskies at 133 pounds while Shirk picked up four wins, including a :37 fall.

The Huskies, 1-1, 0-1 EWL, return to action on December 17th when they travel to Delaware to take part in the 3rd Annual Brute Beast Collegiate Invitational. Bloomsburg resumes their dual season on January 8th when they travel to Ohio State to take part in the Buckeye Duals.
