Bloomsburg Falls to West Virginia in EWL Match Up

BLOOMSBURG— The Bloomsburg University wrestling team fell to West Virginia, 22-16, in an Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) match up Saturday night.

Despite splitting matches with the Mountaineers, the Huskies were unable to earn enough bonus points in their five wins to defeat the Mountaineers. The Mountaineers recorded two major decisions, a technical fall and a pin over the Huskies. For Bloomsburg, Mike Sees (Northumberland/Northumberland) earned the only bonus points for the Huskies with a major decision in the opening bout of the match. Jim Bertulis (Aston/Garnett Valley), Bryce Hasseman (Franklin, IN/Franklin), Chad Hoare (DuBois/DuBois) and Mike Spaid (Boyertown/Boyertown) also recorded wins by decision for the Huskies.

West Virginia goes to 1-2, 1-0 in the EWL, while the Huskies fall to 3-5, 0-2 in the EWL. Bloomsburg is back in action on Jan. 22nd hosting Millersville and Slippery Rock in a tri-meet.

125-Sees gave the Huskies an early 4-0 lead with a 20-10 major decision win over the Mountaineers' Shawn Cordell. Sees took an early 6-2 lead going into the second period where he scored nine points after choosing the defensive position. Despite two Cordell escapes, Sees scored on a takedown and earned two penalty points off stalling calls against Cordell. Sees was awarded one point for riding time.

133- West Virginia's Seth Lisa, ranked 20th in the nation, got five quick points in the first period en route to an 11-0 major decision win over Joe Hasseman (Franklin, IN/Franklin). After selecting the defensive position in the second, Lisa scored three points on an escape and a takedown. Lisa got one more takedown in the third and earned a point on riding time to seal the win for the Mountaineers.

141- 10th-ranked Brandon Lauer of West Virginia got an 11-5 win over the Huskies' Brad Forbes (Downingtown/Downingtown) giving the Mountaineers a 7-4 lead in the match. After the first period, Lauer took a 7-2 lead, including a takedown, reversal and three back points. In the third, Forbes was able to prevent a major decision win earning an escape and a takedown nearing the close of the match. Lauer was awarded one point for riding time.

149- The Mountaineer's Mike Torriero scored eight first period points en route to a 19-2 technical fall win over Bloomsburg's Mark Piermattei (Middleburg/Middleburg). In the second, Piermattei got an escape, but Torriero scored on a takedown and earned three back points before the end of the period. Torriero got a takedown and three backpoints again in the third, earning the technical fall 5:50 into the match. One point for riding time was also awarded to Torriero.

157- Matt Lebe, ranked 10th, earned a 13-5 major decision win over the Huskies' Chris Tate (Boothwyn/Garnett Valley). Lebe recorded six takedowns in the match, including three in the first period, while Tate had five escapes. In the final period, Lebe scored on two escapes and also earned a point for riding time.

165- Jim Bertulis gave the Huskies their second win of the night with a 9-8 decision over the Mountaineers' Zac Fryling. After leading 2-1 heading into the second period, Fryling scored two takedowns to Bertulis' three escapes to tie the match heading to the third. In the final minute of the match, Bertulis got a takedown to take a 9-6 lead. Fryling earned a penalty point and en escape, but was unable to put another point on the board, giving the bout to the Huskies.

174- Bryce Hasseman (Franklin, IN/Franklin) recorded the third win of the night for the Huskies with a 3-1 decision over West Virginia's Ryan Wilman. After a scoreless first period, Hasseman scored on an escape and a takedown in the second. Despite a Wilman escape in the third, Hasseman held on for the win.

184- Top-ranked Greg Jones put six points on the board for West Virginia pinning Bloomsburg's Jesse Hasseman (Franklin, IN/Franklin) 1:33 into the match. Jones scored five points quickly on a takedown and backpoints, but Hasseman retaliated with a reversal. After an escape, Jones got another quick takedown and pinned Hasseman, putting the Mountaineers up, 22-10.

197-Chad Hoare (DuBois/DuBois) earned four points in the final period in an 8-3 decision over West Virginia's Jared Villers. After a scoreless first period, Villers scored on a reversal after selecting the defensive position. Hoare earned an escape and also recorded a takedown before the end of the period. In the third, Hoare got a reversal from the defensive position. Hoare also recorded a takedown after a Villers escape in the third and earned his final point on riding time. Even with a loss at 197 pounds, West Virginia sealed the team win.

HWT- Mike Spaid (Boyertown/Boyertown) got his first career dual match win of the season with a 7-4 win over West Virginia's Matt Holsopple. Leading 3-2 heading into the third, Spaid chose the defensive position and scored early on an escape. He also recorded a takedown in the third and earned one point for riding time.
