Mike Spaid Wins Two at NCAA championships

AUBURN HILLS, MI- Bloomsburg University wrestler Mike Spaid (Perkiomenville/ Boyertown) advanced through to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships held at Auburn Hills, Michigan on Thursday. Five other Bloomsburg wrestlers failed to advance to the quarterfinals.

Spaid (285 pounds) won an 8-4 decision over Indiana's Joe Buuck in the opening round. In the second round, Spaid defeated North Carolina State's Janior Palma in a 3-2 decision to advance to tomorrow's quarterfinals. The match was tied at 2-2 at the end of regulation but Spaid held the riding time advantage to earn the win.

Mike Sees (Northumberland/ Shikellamy) (125 pounds) defeated Iowa State's Nicholas Fanthorpe in a 9-4 decision in his first round match. However, in the second round, Sees was pinned by Indiana's Angel Escobedo at 5:52.

Matt Moley (Phoenixville/ Spring Ford) (149 pounds) won his opening round match over Columbia's Matthew Dunn, winning a 10-8 overtime victory. In the second round Moley lost a 5-1 decision to Minnesota's Dustin Schlatter.

At 133 pounds, Ricky Donald (Millville/ Millville was pinned by Minnesota's Mack Reiter 5:36 into his opening round match, then beat Mark Anderson of West Virginia, 1-0, in second round of consolations.

At 184 pounds, Nate Shirk (Middleburg/ Middleburg) lost a 13-4 major decision to Lehigh's David Craig in the first round, then was eliminated with a second round by Josh Edmondson of Chattanoga, 6-4, SV. Darren Kern (Pennsburg/Upper Perkioman) also lost his first round match at 141 pounds, losing to Hofstra's Charles Griffin in a 10-0 major decision before coming back with a win in consolations, 7-5, over Justin Perch of Oregon.

The NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships will continue Friday morning with the quarterfinals and the wrestle back rounds.
