Bloomsburg Defeats Beats Cleveland State in Wrestling
BLOOMSBURG-- The Bloomsburg University wrestling team beat Cleveland State on Saturday by a score of 23-12. The Huskies picked up wins in five of six bouts after falling behind 3-0 in the first match of the day at 197 pounds to get the win.
197-After a scoreless first period, Bloomsburg's Eric Shaw (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) opened the second period with an escape after starting down. That turned out to be the only scoring of the period. Cleveland State's Benny Balogh started on bottom and escaped to tied the score, then got the first takedown of the match to go up 3-1. Shaw escaped to get back to 3-2, but Balogh was awarded a point for Shaw fleeing the mat to make the final 4-2.
285-The match was nearly scoreless until BU's Mike Spaid (Perkiomenville/Boyertown) picked up a takedown on Rashard Goff with five seconds left in the period. Spaid escaped to start the second period to go up 3-0 which turned out to be the only scoring of the frame. In the third period, Spaid rode Goff for the entire third period and picked up a point for Goff stalling and one point for riding time to win 5-0 and tie the match at 3-3.
125-Bloomsburg's Mike Sees (Northumberland/Shikellamy) scored a takedown and a three-point near fall in the first period to lead 5-0 after the first three minutes of action. In the second period Sees dominated the action and recorded three takedowns, a reversal and two near falls to earn a win by technical fall, 18-3.
133-Cleveland State's Josh Palivoda and Bloomsburg's Jason Guffey (Muncy/Warrior Run) had a busy first period with Palivoda getting two takedowns and a reversal with Guffey picking up a reversal and an escape for a 6-3 lead for the Vikings'. In the second period, Guffey scored the only points of the period with a reversal in the opening seconds. In the third period, Guffey tied the bout at 7-7 with a takedown with 1:31 to go, then after Palivoda escaped, Guffey went in front 9-8 with another takedown. Guffey then hung on for a 10-8 win with riding time.
141-After a scoreless opening period, Bloomsburg's Darren Kern (Pennsburg/Upper Perkiomen) started the second period with an escape, the only scoring of the bout to that point. In the third period, Kern opened a three-point lead over the Viking's Mike Hurley with a two-point near fall. Hurley escaped with just about a minute left in the match, but that would his only point of the match giving Kern a 3-1 win.
149-There was no scoring in the opening period between the Huskies' George Hickman (Castle Hayne, NC/Riverside) and CSU's Ryan Hurley. Hickman scored the only points of the second period with an escape with Hurley tying the score at 1-1 with an escape to start the third period, which is how regulation ended. After a scoreless OT, both wrestlers recorded escapes in the extra sessions. In the second set of overtimes, both wrestlers again scored escapes with Hurley eventually winning on riding time by a 4-3 score.
157-Bloomsburg's Matt Moley (Phoenixville/Spring Ford) made quick work of Robbie Michaels getting a win by fall in just 52 seconds. Moley got a takedown, then quickly put Michaels on his back and earned the pin.
165-With no scoring in the first period, the Viking's Marcus Effner started the second period with an escape against the Huskies' Rickey Schemelyun (New Oxford/Bermudian Springs). Effner's takedown made it 3-0 before Schmelyun's escape to start the third period made it a 3-1 match which is how it ended.
174-Cleveland State's JT Miller took a 2-0 lead after one period against Bloomsburg's Brian Shaw (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg). In the second Shaw scored a reversal to briefly tie the score at 2-2 before Miller got a reversal of how his own to lead 4-2 heading into the third period. A takedown and an escape for Miller along with a point for riding time made the final 8-3.
184-Bloomsburg's Jesse Hasseman (Franklin, IN/Franklin) recorded the first points of his match with DJ Cummins on a reversal early in the second period followed by a three-point near fall for a 5-0 lead. Cummins escaped to make it a 5-1 lead for Hasseman going to the third period. In the final frame, Hasseman picked up a late takedown and riding time to win 8-2.
Bloomsburg is now 5-6-1-, 2-1 in the EWL. The Huskies wrestle at Central Michigan Feb. 10th at 2 p.m.
