Moley Guaranteed All-American Honors
ST. LOUIS, MO-- Bloomsburg University's Matt Moley (Phoenixville/Spring Ford) guaranteed himself All-American honors with three wins on Friday at the NCAA Division I wrestling championships. However, the road came to an end for two other Huskies, Mike Sees (Northumberland/Shikellamy) and Mike Spaid (Perkiomenville/Boyertown).
Moley opened the day in round three of consolation and posted an 8-4 win over Brian Letters of Maryland. He led 4-2 after one period with two takedowns. After a scoreless second period, Letters tied the score with a takedown. Moley responded with an escape, then a takedown to go in front 7-4. With a point for riding time he finished with an 8-4 win.
In round four, he took out Jason Johnstone of Ohio State by a 6-4 score. Moley got a takedown in each of the three periods to advance. In round five, He faced Tyler Sherfey of Boise State and posted a 7-4 win. Tied 2-2 after two periods, Moley gained a takedown and near fall to win by three. Moley will now face Brandon Becker of Indiana on Saturday in the consolation quarterfinals and is guaranteed All-American no matter what happens on Saturday.
Sees started the day in round three of consolations and posted an 8-1 win over Steve Mytych of Drexel. Sees jumped out to a 5-0 lead after one period with a takedown and a two-point near fall. The senior then pushed the lead to 8-0 after two periods and with a point for riding time posted an 8-1 victory to advance.
In round four of consolations, Sees posted a 13-4 win over Luke Smith of Central Michigan. Sees recorded three takedowns and two near falls in posting the win.
However, in the match that would guarantee him All-American honors with a win, Sees lost by a score of 10-2 to Brandon Precin of Northwestern. Precin was able to pick up three near falls and a takedown to end Sees' collegiate career.
Spaid opened his day with a 12-3 major decision over Ryan Flores of Columbia in round three of consolations. In round four of consolations, Spaid battled EWL-rival Dustin Rogers of West Virginia and pinned him in just 45 seconds leaving him one win shy of repeating as an All-American.
Facing Matt Fields of Iowa, Spaid and the Hawkeye were tied at 3-3 through two periods. In the third frame, Fields escaped to go in front 4-3. After Spaid got a takedown to go back on top 5-4, Fields worked a reversal at the buzzer and pulled out the win.
