Huskies Seventh After Day One of Southern Scuffle

BLOOMSBURG-- The Bloomsburg University wrestling team is in seventh place after day one of the Southern Scuffle wrestling tournament in Greensboro, NC. The Huskies have 36 points with Minnesota leading with 53.5 points.

In the championship bracket, Mike Sees (Northumberland/Shikellamy) at 125 pounds won his three matches on the day and has advanced to the quarterfinals. Among Sees' wins was a fall over William Chamberlin of Old Dominion in 3:45.

At 157 pounds, Matt Moley (Phoenixville/Spring-Ford) at advanced to the quarters with two wins including an 18-5 win over Carlo Ferrandino of Boston University.

Also advancing to the quarterfinals at 197 pounds was Eric Shaw (Holidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) who picked up two close victories, 5-3, over Johnny Buck of The Citadel and 9-7 in overtime against Corey Waite of Binghamton.

At heavyweight, Mike Spaid (Perkiomenville/Boyertown) picked up two wins to move into the quarterfinals. Spaid beat Terry Tate of Edinboro 4-0, and then pinned James Guerin of Hofstra in 4:23. The two wins give Spaid 99 for his career and moved him to within one of becoming the 11th wrestler in school history to reach 100 career victories.

Remaining alive in the consolation bracket are Jason Guffey (Muncy/Warrior Run), George Hickman (Castle Hayne, NC/Riverside), Darren Kern (Pennsburg/Upper Perkiomen), Dennis Bermudez (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties), Ricky Schmelyun (New Oxford/Bermudian Springs), and Brian Shaw (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg).
