Bloomsburg Wrestling Loses to West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, WV-- Despite winning the first three matches of the evening, the Bloomsburg University wrestling team lost to West Virginia University, 21-12, on Friday night in an Eastern Wrestling League matchup.

Bloomsburg started the night with a win from 11th-ranked Mike Sees (Northumberland/Shikellamy) who beat Kyle Turnbull, 15-10, at 125 pounds. Jason Guffey (Muncy/Warrior Run) then posted a 10-3 win at 133 pounds over Jared Garvin giving the Huskies a 6-0 lead.

At 141 pounds, Bloomsburg's Darren Kern (Pennsburg/Upper Perkiomen) posted a 7-2 win and the Huskies were in front by a 9-0 score.

West Virginia, though, came back and tied the score with wins in three close bouts. Bloomsburg's George Hickman (Castle Hayne, NC/Riverside), moving up a weight class, lost 3-2 at 149 pounds, while 17th-ranked Matt Moley (Phoenixville/Spring-Ford) lost 3-1 in overtime to 18th ranked to Zac Fryling. Then, Rickey Schmelyun (New Oxford/Bermudian Springs) lost 6-5 at 165 pounds to tie the score at 9-9.

The Mountaineers then stretched their lead to an insurmountable 21-9 margin with a major decision at 174; a win by decision at 184; and a technical fall at 197.

At heavyweight, Mike Spaid (Perkiomenville/Boyertown) won his 31st match of the season with a 6-2 win over Dustin Rogers.

Bloomsburg, now 3-6-1, 0-3 in the EWL, will host Clarion on Friday night at 7 p.m.
